I thought someone in this group posted a link to a description what the recruits are going through each week, but I can't seem to find it. Does anyone have that, and if so, please repost? Thanks.

Jessica: According to some new sailors, they DO sometimes forward the mail as they have received it. However, I have read on these groups more often than not that they do NOT always get mail forwarded from RTC.

SOBE: I have always gone by what you shared below about buying airline tickets early. I booked my flights when he was in week 3 of bc (had been up there for about 4.5 weeks). Then he got asmoed. I decided not to cancel until he was with his new division, even though he gave me a new PIR date when asmoed. Thank goodness I didn't change then because he was out in a week rather than 2 weeks, and gave me yet another PIR date. So, now, he was within about 3-4 weeks of graduation. When I called the airlines to change, imagine my surprise to find out that the tickets were now CHEAPER! By $61 per ticket. So that almost halved the $150 change fee, which was nice.

I recommend booking hotel and rental car asap, as those do not have cancellation fees up to 48 hrs before you arrive. I like to advise families to wait until the half way mark before purchasing airfare. Lots of things can happen - medical setbacks, test setbacks, etc. The Navy recommends buying refundable tickets - they are crazy! Those cost $400 to $600 more per person! It is more reasonable to purchase normal or budget tickets, then just pay the $100 change fee if you need to delay your trip (if their PIR date gets pushed back) or if for some reason you need to cancel entirely (any reason), you have credit with that airline for one year (less change fee, and if you cancel before boarding time). So... you want to book at least 14 days before you want to leave in order to get decent prices, 21 days before to get even better deals and 28 days (4 wks) to get the best airfare prices. I travel for my job and I book my own travel, so I have a little practice at this. Hope this helps.
