N4M's Community Guidelines and OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

SeaWolfette:  Another N4Moms veteran flew with Southwest.  She did a flight/car search on their website, but didn't book the car--just the flight...they ended up sending her a code that got her a car for $12/day!  So check out the options on Southwest's website.

Good morning everyone, I was just looking at the screen names for this group and they made me smile lol. I love what people come up with. I hope you all have a great Sunday.

SeaWolfette:  I was in the same place as you when my son went in back in 2009...not a military family, didn't understand everything (he was older, joined in another city, so I didn't even meet his recruiter and he said little to me about what was going on).  My Bootcamp experience on here wasn't that great...not many N4Moms veterans on then so little info.  When my son was asmoed(setback), I could find NO info in the group about what that meant...yikes!  Thankfully, he was back to training in a week but still Scary....so after my son PIRed, another N4Moms veteran and I hopped on here (early 2010) and started helping out.  We have others (listed at top of the page) who have been wonderful in joining us as their SRs PIRed.  I am ever SO GRATEFUL for all who have done that .... they have been a godsend!  CatMom is our most recent addition....you will see her, ellen, and Lala all over this site with their great info and encouragement!  ellen is the one who starts the PIR groups (along with FTLW).  FTLW should be back soon with her great info.

Made me feel good when I got a message via an employee at the A School up there (who used to work at RTC)....that the RTC staff is grateful for the info we share with you all here as it saves them from so many calls/emails that sometimes they can't get to in a timely manner.

So...we are here to help and all know what you are going through because we have been there!  It gets better...and remember...A School is a whole different "ballgame!"  You are back in contact with them!  YAH!

Hey Ding Ding, Jeepgirl and perida7. My son is on Ship 09.Div 406. I received the kid in the box and the form letter but no calls. I made reservations and the Navy Lodge. $64 a night. Not sure the best airport to fly into yet but on the case. I am getting excited. Light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you diannep.  Our sailor will be attending Seebee A School in Port Hueneme so it sounds like that would mean she will be flying out on Saturday, if I am understanding the general information I have found on this site.  We'll be flying out Thursday and heading back to California on Sunday so that will leave Saturday open to spend more time with her, if scheduling permits.  I just made our reservation at the Navy Lodge so just need to book the flights now.  This group has been very helpful - it is definitely a huge adjustment, going from being able to talk with my daughter whenever needed via cell phone to having basically no contact at all with my sailor without the military background to understand the norms.

Comment by diannep on September 8, 2013 at 8:07am

...I should add that Navy Lodge is about a mile from RTC.  It is not on the actual base but in the housing area.

Welcome, SeaWolfette!  So glad you found the group!  I am one of the N4Moms Veterans on the PIR groups (since 2010) to help out.  Please ask any questions you have at any time!  Our "team" while try to answer as quickly as possible.

You are correct....Southwest Airlines into either Milwaukee (45 min to GL) or Chicago-Midway (hour+ to GL) is a good choice...mainly for the no change fee and 2 bags checking for free!  Will your new sailor stay in GL for A School, or fly out?  We suggest that you book your return late Sunday or even Monday if you will have a GL A School sailor since you will have Daytime Liberty with your sailor throughout the weekend.  If flying out, book back Sunday anyway because although they normally fly out on Saturday, sometimes they may not leave until Sunday, and you don't want to miss time with them.  You will be able to wait at the airport with your sailor (with ID, you can get a gate pass to wait until departure).

Recommended hotels courtesy of past reviews from ladies on this site are:

Navy Lodge (book in your SR's name, tell them you are there for Bootcamp Grad)

Springhill Suites*

Courtyard Inn*

Residence Inn*

Holiday Inn Express*

*all of these hotels are in Waukegan/Gurnee, 4-5 miles from RTC, and very close to the MeetandGreet held for you all by "Sarge" the night before PIR.  They also use the local shuttle service to PIR or you can use Sarge's shuttle service....same price....$3/pp each way.

Be sure to call the hotels directly and ask for their Navy Bootcamp Grad rate...compare with any other discounts you may be entitled to.  We used our AAA rate at Residence when up there...good hotel.  Pets allowed too (as well as at Navy Lodge!).  Doubt you will be bringing any from CA though  lol !  You can book your hotel whenever....they hare liberal cancellation policies, usually up to day before/day of arrival.

Please read the info in the "pages" section under the MEMBERS PHOTO BOX towards the top and to the right of this page.  Lots of info for you there!

Good Morning Everyone!

Hi All - I am new to this group so very appreciative of all the information.  We just received the form letter from our daughter yesterday so have learned that her PIR is Oct 25 and she is in Ship 02 Division 950.  We will be traveling to PIR from the Sacramento California  area and it sounds like Southwest to Milwaukee has received good reviews for convenience at the airport and ticket change flexibility. Any other thoughts/recommendations out there before I buy the plane tickets?
