Orlando'sMom:  Glad he sounded better!

Also, there is no traffic from Milwaukee to GL, car rental is usually cheaper too.  From Midway, it is about an hour or more to GL and there is lots of traffic!

Orlando'sMom,

We suggest you book flights and hotel directly with the airline and hotels because if there is a change in PIR plans, those travel sites aren't as easy to deal with.

Southwest Airlines flies into Midway Airport in Chicago as well as Milwaukee, which is about 35 mins away with 2 bags checked for free and no change fee.  Best days to purchase airline tickets are Tuesdays & Wednesdays when airfares drop a little.

Recommended hotels are the Navy Lodge (book in your SR's name), and Courtyard by Marriot, Holiday Inn Express, Residence Inn, Springhill Suites, which are all in Waukegan/Gurnee about 10 mins away from Recruit Training Command (RTC).  Book directly with them and ask for the Navy Graduation Rate.  No deposit necessary to book a room.

littleman14,

Also, if you have a forwarding on your new address, it takes a bit for the mail to catch up with you.  The best way is to give your new address directly to people and organizations that really need to get mail to you quickly.  Hope all the messages and letters from you will remind your SR of your new address!

Maggie, A Schools do go on holiday stand down for approx two weeks. Most sailors can go home, but they do have to keep a crew to keep the base as active. I haven't seen the holiday stand down dates yet, I think they are posted in Oct.

Your son will probably book his own travel as he will know times, dates etc, that you may not be aware of, even after talking to him. He can let his brother know what his schedule will be.

Hello group if any have flight package information for great lakes state please let me know i am in nyc and any information to make my trip smooth would be greatly appreciated.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that A school in GL (and perhaps everywhere) closes down for 2 weeks at Christmas and the sailors can go home. Is this true? Ours will be there about 39 days.  And if partially true, when will we know for sure? It would be so great to know when and for how long we can see him and when we can book his travel as our other son lives in Chicago and we would love them to be able to travel home to FL together for the holidays.

Littleman 14 so sorry that has happened to you .

Comment by littleman14 on September 29, 2014 at 12:49pm

Liz, be happy you at least heard from him. I have yet to hear from my son. No letter No call. We had recently moved and all of his paper work has the wrong address. He also put the wrong address on the box. Thank God FedEx called us. that is how we found out about the address. I have another mom who is helping me out by sending a note through her son and I am sending one as well. I called the recruiter last week to get the ship and Div.....hopefully it is the same and nothing has happened... What a lesson on letting go. This is so hard
