Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Make sure to read our Community Guidelines and this Navy Operations Security (OPSEC) checklist - loose lips sink ships!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Navy Lodge (has to be booked in your SR's name; mention Navy Grad) - mile to RTC

Springhill Suites*

Courtyard Inn*

Residence Inn *

Holiday Inn Express*

*these hotels are in Waukegan/Gurnee area, about 4-5 miles from RTC....close to the MeetandGreet (Sarge's) held the night before for the PIR Navy families. Shuttle service is available from all of these hotels (both Sarge's shuttle service and the local area PIR shuttle service). Navy Lodge just uses Sarge's shuttle service.

Comment by diannep on September 25, 2013 at 11:13pm: Ruth: I have to agree with ellen. Rental car is the cheapest if you look for a good deal...shuttles can get expensive.

For those electing to take a shuttle from the airport/Great Lakes, check with Sarge for his prices too on that: 847 212 0246 or johnspadaro@att.net. He has a MeetandGreet for you all the night before PIR. He is very helpful to the sailors in A School and the families who come up for graduation. He runs a shuttle service and gives discounts to Navy families.

Comment by ellen0502 on September 25, 2013 at 10:45pm: Ruth TH, I think you will find that having a rental car will not only be more convenient, but also more cost effective that taking a taxi and shuttle everywhere. If you are going into Chicago after PIR, the best way to travel is by the Metra.

Things in the area are not close enough to walk to, and cab fare will add up quickly.

(Midway to Waukegan Area) I'm not concerned about transport to and from the airport but more curious about getting around town near the base. Anyone?
