Ok I did some investigating on this site (really it is just a matter of google and pressing the right button...lol) because this had me wondering (I've been around here for not quite a year) :).
There was a post from 2009 on this site from a mom about her BC experience. The "Graduation Packet" she was talking about is one they no longer send. It included the form letter, a parking pass and information regarding PIR. So what you may be reading or seeing I would assume is "old" information.
You now get your form letter separate, you download the pass, and the information is here and on the RTC website about PIR.
Most hotels in the area give those checking in for PIR information about restaurants, attractions, and other things to do etc. I don't know about the others, but the Navy Lodge also give you a PIR schedule.
I understand that the Residence Inn actually hands you an envelope of information for you, the Navy Lodge does not have an actual package, but they do give you all the information paper handouts etc.
Also, I just saw a cut-and-paste note I had saved that talked about going to the Navy Exchange after PIR and it mentioned "I believe the grad packet the sailors get also has a 10% off coupon". Don't know how old the post that had that snippet was and the way procedures are changing lately, it may be old news.
I have been on SO many N4M pages my head is spinning (in a good way!) and I can't recall specifically where I saw it but I seem to remember a mention that some of the hotels have PIR/Graduation packets which contain local area info, attractions, suggestions, etc. I think the Residence Inn is supposed to have a good one. Can anyone back me up on my spotty memory?
I'm not diannep, but I don't know what the Graduation Packet may be. There is nothing that is sent out to the family before PIR except for the box and the form letter.
Perhaps they are talking about the "picture package". That would be their graduation pictures, and depending on what is ordered a Keel included, and a separate DVD from graduation maybe. The pictures are generally not sent home before PIR, but some are.
diannep - I have a question. Is there such a thing as a Graduation Packet that the family receives 3 weeks before PIR? I read this on a site, but wanted to get the information directly from a veteran mom. Thank you for your time.
ZacMansMom2012 - That is so funny. Gotta stock up on pickles before he comes home after A school. My whole mood changed today after talking to him. Can't wait to meet everyone.
You are too funny, martiheg.... :-)
Update on Brett: He is doing better, but still critical...on the ventilator still....but is no longer sedated so is responding to others around him...nodding yes and no....tears sometimes...grimaces in frustration other times...fighting his restraints (on him because his stomach incision is still open as is his leg incision...has to be very careful---tubes everywhere). He is progressing so we are happy. Long road ahead but he's getting there. Thanks for the prayers...and please continue! Here is the link to the caringbridge updates on him:

I came across this picture of Brett when he was 7 yrs old meeting my sailor son (5 days old) for the first time...so sweet...that's Brett's mom/sister in the pik. Our families have been friends since our parents were best friends as teenagers....and still are to this day!
You're SO right, diannep ~ I was totally remiss not mentioning the other angels on this site. I blame waking up and acting on impulse, having just read one of your posts.
But LaLa Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons (oops! I mean LaLa the Storm Chaser), ellen0502, ♥FireTeamLeaderWife♥ aka FTLW, Betsy, son on Stennis carrier and Craig, you all provide much-needed info and comfort when we newbies are freaking out. Thank-you for your help! I hope to one day return the favor and have enough knowledge to become a den mother too.
OK, ladies. I have added a discussion above for those interested in "carpooling" from the airports with SARGE. He charges by the car, not by the person. Sooo....if you all can "meet up" in the discussion group with your arrival times/airport destination/# of people....maybe you can all save some money?
