Well we are going to fly Alaska Airlines, direct there but coming home we only have to change planes in Seattle, not too bad.  The tickets go up pretty good if we come home on Saturday or Sunday, so that's why I chose Friday night.  It will only be his fiance and I so it should go pretty smoothly.  I already know how much things change because just signing up in May until he left in September things changed.  LOL  I can only imagine how it will be now.

Tiffani - this is going to be the $64,000 question!

You know you will get Thanksgiving...as far as after that...up in the air. I am going to go to the October DEP groups and see if I can get info from past PIR’s...but even then each one is different.

My son PIR'd on Memorial Day weekend so his PIR was a Thursday. On Tuesday when I was flying over he went from a next day departure to a Sunday Departure...that's how randomly things can change in the military. I booked through to Sunday knowing that it could. I based this on the advice from the veteran moms on here. So glad I did! Would have lost time with my son. If it had stayed the way it was...I knew that I would just sight see for a day!

So, your Sailor will be the best source of info, but as you can see it even changed for him. We advise you to book a hotel now, as almost all of the hotels will allow changes within 24 hours (some the day of), and the flight about four weeks in. HOWEVER, since it is Thanksgiving I know that is going to go out the window! Southwest does not charge for changing flights and has free first (?) checked bag. Not sure all of the airports that they service (diannep and LaLa know this I think). I wanted non-stop and so flew American...cost me more and I took a hit checked bags...but that was me...you do what fits your needs best. We don't fly and I did not want to change planes.

Barbara - You will be in the next PIR group...I am in the process of getting it under way.

@Cheryl, I read on last years Thanksgiving PIR group that they got to spend more time with family, but I'm sure this could change.  Our plane gets into Ohare about 4:20 on 11/22 and then we leave Friday evening.

Thanks diannep - I am just trying to think about coordinating how to get to RTC with a car seat that I don't really want to take to PIR.  Ideally driving for that reason would be great.

Diana - I'm thinking of leaving San Diego on Tuesday morning.  I'd like to get in early enough to get settled and make it to a meet and greet.  I was considering flying in Monday after work but then I'd have to drive in the dark and I'm not keen on that when I don't know the area and if the weather may be bad.  I will probably look at staying until either Friday night or Saturday afternoon.  Not sure with the holiday if he would ship out on Friday or Saturday.

Has anyone heard if our sailors will be given any time off due to the early graduation and Thanksgiving holiday? Or will they be leaving the morning after PIR as usual?
Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on October 11, 2011 at 5:04pm

For the Navy Lodge...call them and ask them what they require. I have dependant ID and so they asked for my Husbands Rank...that was it. I showed my ID when i checked in.

What I have heard for Recruits...they will book you but ask for information PIR date, name...then I have heard that you just have to bring your new Sailor by to verify.

Abrey's Mom - Diana, Thanks for the site welcome!!  Did Residence Inn give you the military discount for PIR?  I would like to make my reservations, too.  What is that number?

Comment by ABH Mom (Tiffani) on October 11, 2011 at 4:33pm
Thank you NavyWife, I will send them a message and ask them how that would work
Comment by navywife on October 11, 2011 at 4:32pm
Not sure how this works at an RTC base, but when you check in at the Navy Lodge you normally have to have the sponsor with their ID present (the active duty military person) to check in.  They're pretty picky about this, but maybe it's different since it's an RTC.  Just don't want anyone to get left hanging at the last minute. If you haven't clarified that you might want to call and check to let them know the military person won't be present at check in.
