We got a letter at the house today from our son. Actually it was addressed to the Miller Residents.....People not house. It was pretty funny to see it that way. Anyway, as it turns out it wasn't for us, as when we opened it it informed us to please send it on to his big sister who is also in the Navy. As it was already opened, I can't honestly say we didn't read it anyway. I know, there was some conscience involved, but a letter is a letter when it is the first to come from our boy.

Diana- what day did your SR leave for boot camp? I actually got a real letter from my daughter 2 days before the form letter came. It arrived about 10 days after the box with her personal items. I didn't think it was ever going to arrive and I still don't know why it took so long. And someone else had one that was put into a neighbors box by mistake so check with your neighbors as well.

My daughter's recruiter told me that if I didn't hear from her I could call him and he'd make sure she wrote, but she would get "really strong that day". Is that true? I'm new to all this Navy stuff but there's no way I would want her to get PT for not writing.

After PIR the sailors who are not grad-n-go usually go back to their barracks and get their pics then they come back out and meet you and can leave with you for the day. They usually have to be back by 8 but have them back at least 1/2 hour early. If they are late they loose leave the next day, not only for themselves but for others in their div as well. Then you get to pick them up again the next morning and keep them all day again and again on Sunday.

If they are grad and go to anywhere other than Great Lakes the info above is usually the same for the day of PIR. Then they leave for the airport around 4 or 5 am the next morning. If they are not on a chartered flight you can meet them at the airport and spend time with them there as well. It may be an extra hour or 2 with them or it could be several hours. Flights leave throughout the day. If you meet them at the airport you can give them their cell phone and lap top if they have one.

If they are grad-n-go and staying in Great Lakes they usually have to move all their belongings across the street right after PIR. It takes about 4 or 5 hours. Then they call you to pick them up and in most cases you get them for the rest of the weekend including nights. They are the lucky ones. They might have to go back to serve watch for a few hours but that's not a big deal.
