My daughter changed courses too. She had planned to attend community college 5 mins from our house to get her nursing degree. She wants to be a trauma nurse. Then financial aid was denied, and her dad filed for child support modification and the back support was dismissed, he was excused from helping pay for college and the child support was slashed to a fraction of what he was paying. There was no money for college, so she joined the Navy. This all happened in about a month! She wasn't supposed to leave for bootcamp until the end of Feb, but shipped 10/4. It's been a whirlwind. I think part of me is still in denial that she's gone, but now I am focused on seeing her at PIR all grown up and in uniform.

StarChild: Yep, we on here understand what it is like with a loved one in the military...so different from the civilian world. So vent on here anytime! And it is HOOYAH, but HOORAH is the Marines whom the Navy works closely with....so both terms are all good!

jasonsmom: Ditto on my son not wanting me involved either! My son joined where he lived at the time...about 2 hours from me. His recruiter was very thorough and I'm sure gave him the info for N4M's. Never saw it...he didn't even send me the brochures in the PIR form letter! I didn't know those existed until after PIR! He wouldn't let me come to either of his MEPS swearing ins...nothing.....because he wanted to do it on his own. I too found this site on my own....and am so grateful for it! It is so great that they want to "grow up," but they have to let us moms down EASY, right????? The empty nest that I went through last Nov was hard enough! He and I have always been very close and still are, which made it harder for each of us to push away from one another...but it has been a good thing!

labmom: My son's story parallels your daughter's....almost word for word. He finished his 2 yr college degree, had worked all during that time too, and after a while, starting jumping from job to job as well (although in the same industry). He came up with the Navy idea after a family friend went in the year before. My son is an actor personality. Always has been...and wanted to be one. So was this guy. But they knew how hard that was to get into. So....he presented us with the Navy idea. Have to say...we weren't so thrilled at first (fear, of course). But we prayed about it and realized how much he had researched this, so we gave him our blessings after our hearts were changed. Although he still has a ways to go in growing up, he has made great strides in maturity since being in...it has been such a good thing for him. I say...YAH for your daughter and my son for getting it together....with the Navy's help!

Good Morning everyone. I have been getting emails from your group about the ribbons. Thanks so much for all the compliments. If anyone else is interested just send me a friend request and I will send you all the info. I think the pics are on about page 17 or 18 but if you can't find them let me know and I will repost them.

I shared this with a couple other groups and thought you all mike like it as well.....If anyone runs out of ideas on what to write about and your SR has a pet you can write a letter from your pet. I sent one to my sailor from her cat. He told her that since she left he had been put on a crash diet unwillingly and he was not happy about it. he told her that we were rationing his food and she needed to hurry up with whatever she was doing. He didn't see how her leaving to work at "boots camp" could be more important that him getting fed all the food he wants. (Boots is our neighbors cat lol) She loved the letter and said she laughed so hard that all the girls in her div wanted to know what the heck was in that letter. I have seen some parents put a sign around their pets neck that said I Miss You and they took a pic of it and sent it to their sailor. :-) Write about anything at all..... Just Write, they will be so glad you did.

labmom39 - I think it would be hard - you think your kids are on a certain path and then all of a sudden they do 180 degree turn. Totally different from what you thought they would do. But I have to tell you, graduating from college in this economic climate is no guarantee for a future right now. I have a niece and nephew that graduated in 2009 and are just now finding work. I'm sure your daughter thought about graduation and what were her choices and decided that maybe Navy would be okay. I'm so glad you resolved everything before she went into college. It's hard, but it will turn out to be a good thing for her.

So I came on here now to give you all my happy news .. but decided to go through a few pages on here first since I haven't read through posts in this group in a few days. So now I sit here with tears from reading all of your touching comments and stories. You all know exactly how I feel !!! I did not know about this site, my son was one of those kids that wanted to do this all on his own and didn't want us to be involved in his DEP experience so my husband and I respected that and let go of the control, after all, he is 20 yrs old and we have to let go at some point. A couple days after he was at bc, I couldn't take it any more and I went searching the internet for any info I could find on Navy recruits and I found this site. I would be so lost without you all, thank you for being here! As for my good news, got a wonderful letter today. He sounded very positive, upbeat, and humorous .. made me laugh a lot and now I feel so relieved. I feel it getting easier. I hope you all get happy letters soon!

I have only been on the site for 2 weeks and I do not know what I would do if I did not have it. No one understands me but N4M. I can cry, yell, and jump for joy and there is always someone who feels the same way or have 'been there done that'. It is so great to have a family who supports each other like we do. HooYah!! or is it HooRah!!

Bubbymom-The letter is on its way. Yes this site is great. My son asked me to joined before he left and I have been on the site since then. I get on the computer as soon as I walk in the house. Hope to see you soon.

You all are finding out how "therapeutic" this site is for all of us. The stories you tell below are the same ones on many of the PIR sites....no one outside of the military understands our feelings...this is NOT like kids at college for sure! So keep sharing and helping each other...it is a great thing!
