labmom: My pleasure....I am only passing on what I have learned through going through it with my son, but it sure helped me to put it into perspective! I got my share of those negative calls/letters too, and he was even asmoed (setback), but in the end....he became a sailor! That is the focus....

I wish I could help you on the Thanksgiving weekend GradNGos. Normally they leave PIR day, or the next day (in this case, Thanksgiving). I know this is a tough weekend to book flights, but she will be the one who gets the info eventually. The only other thing you could do is book for the longer trip and then pay the $150 or whatever the change fee is if need be. My son was GradNGo....we didn't know until we had booked travel home on Sunday. So we kept the flight arrangements and my older son and I made a mini vacation out of it after my sailor left.

I know from my son that Div. 006 started with 84 guys. I'm sure that will drop, just hopefully my son won't be one of them. Haven't heard anything yet, med appointment was Monday. We are figuring that if we haven't heard all is good. I'm sure they would call if they were thinking of sending him home. We would just like some sort of comformation that things are ok. On the up side, today is Thursday so look for those letters from our recruits. This is about the time it takes for those Sunday letters to arrive.

By the time they graduate, there are usually not as many in the divisions due to many being asmoed or separated. My son's PIR had 9 divisions, but only about 650 graduates. So that would be just a little over 70 per division.

AndreaS61 - Do you almost feel that you are becoming an expert at travel arrangements now? I feel like I could probably plan a trip for anywhere now. lol

Star Child - search "hotels near naval base great lakes". There's quite a variety and a wide price range. Also, there should be a brochure in with your letter from RCT that lists several hotels and price ranges.

maliz - there are usually about 88 people to a division (although this may become smaller as a few may drop out). We have 5 divisions which would make our group of graduates about 440 people. That is a small group for graduation (sometimes there are as many as 13 divisions). You definitely want to be there on Wednesday, the day they graduate. If your son is not grad and go he should have Wednesday through Sunday off - 5 days.

I am preparing to book lodging for PIR but I do not know the little towns near RTC. I know Waukegan and Libertyville but are there any others?
Comment by AndreaS61 on October 14, 2010 at 2:39pm
I found that the package deals (Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline, etc.) were nonrefundable or charged cancellation fees on top of what the airlines and hotels charged. Check the fine print if you decide to go with one of these.
