Hey, so I'm just wondering how everyone's getting there, when/where they're coming in, where they're staying, all that jazz - I know it's getting close to time, but I haven't made any carved-in-stone…Continue

maliz: Since FB is a public site, it might be better to post that you have his address and ask that those who want to write should private message you for it.
Just to err on the side of caution here...

Oh, also.....Residence is very close to Springhill Suites and Courtyard, which are both near the WalMart shopping center. It is Residence Inn-Waukegan.

For those with a larger group at PIR and in need of more space, Residence Inn was wonderful. One- or two-bedroom (2 baths in that one) and full kitchen, with gas fireplace. A bit pricey (we used our AAA discount), but nice for those that have need of two bedrooms and baths. Free hot buffet breakfast each morning in the lobby and they are pet friendly too if anyone is driving and bringing pets. We loved our stay there. Oh, and shuttle as well ($3/pp each way). We had no complaints when we went!

Grad and go is when they leave for their A school immediately after graduation. That's terrific he will be so close to you in Port Hueneme.

kevinsproudmom: GradNGo means that they leave either PIR day or Sat. They are bussed out to the airport to wait for flights...sometimes in the wee hours of the morning on Sat. Doesn't leave much time to spend with the new sailors, but many grab more time with them by heading to the airport too and waiting at the gates with them! If they are GradNGo to the GL base there, then they move over there right after the PIR ceremony (usually takes 3-5 hours) and then they catch up with family after that. The good news about that is that they may have overnight liberty with family then.

AndreaS61 - Glad you found a deal that works for you.

I read what your daughter wrote and I imagine it would be hard, especially for females, not to have any privacy. I know I would hate it and I think the fact that our recruits are working through it and pushing on is wonderful.

Sorry to saturate you guys. I just got a really good deal at the Waukegan Super 8 (847) 249-2388. Continental Breakfast, shuttle to PIR, microwave & fridge. For two beds it was $59.99 per night. Refundable up to 24 hrs before. I'm looking for economy, and this is the best I found for the price. just wanted to pass it on.

Tammie - Not sure of your price range but I am staying at Springhill Suites in Waukegan for $80 a night with AAA discount. They did not charge deposit to card and will allow you to cancel until 6 pm the night you arrive. Some people stay at the Navy Lodge - $65 a night and like it a lot. You can also go on tripadvisor.com to look for hotels in the area and they will give you other peoples reviews of the hotels.

Tammie (Daughter in Navy) - I just called Red Carpet Inn - Refundable up to three days before reservation. Cancellation less than 72 hours before reservation - they will charge your credit card for four nights. The first time I called, nobody answered. When I called back, the guy barely spoke English. It's a little pricer than other economy hotels. I'm looking at the Days Inn Libertyville or Days Inn Great Lakes.

By the way, I got "the letter" yesterday confirming PIR on 11/24/10. The note from my daughter said bootcamp had been really hard and that there is NO privacy, but that she's doing okay and misses us. Ahhhhh! It brought tears to my eyes. I read that little blurb a dozen times. It was so good to see her handwriting. Can't wait until I can hug her!!
