I will tell you my honest Opinion (everyones will be different!). If I did not have any Military ID...I would choose the Navy Lodge. IF it was between the two Military housings. Because you don't need any ID and you are not "on base". It is not behind any fenced restricted area. Navy Gateway is within the Main Base.
That being said, Springhill Suites has kitchenettes too and I have heared it is a very nice stay. I believe it is close to restaurants and Wal-Mart.
Navy Lodge is not close to a "shopping mini mall" but does have a shoppette down the street with a Gas Station. To use the shoppette you will need Military ID OR a guest pass available from the front desk. It does have kitchenettes but not always available.
I have a Map from Sarge that shows all of the Hotels in relation to his M & G. Let me go look...
Do you make recommendations for those parents who do not hold active mil IDs? Looks like we could not stay at DoD locations you mentioned below. So many choices. Would you recommend using a travel agent to help coordinate it all, or should I piece it together myself? We will probably be driving. The hotel rates were pleasantly lower than I had expected. From other comments it sounded like having a kitchenette would be desirable (& cost effective) if we are hanging out with our SR during the w/e days of liberty.
My boyfriend will also be going to sub school in Groton after BC!
thank you so much. he thought his recruiter said they might stay in GL for a while. I took Monday off of work, but my youngest son will have to get back to college. But we could stay a little while on Sunday. Only about a six hour drive home. I hope he adjust well. Makes me a nervous wreck.
Dena - I am going to bet that the Gateway is very inexpensive. No tax at both as they are DoD.
Let me look...
Go here to see Photos of the Gateway Inn:

...and Here for Photos of Navy Lodge:
https://www.navy-lodge.com/lodge_photos.html?p_lodge_number=5
The Lodge runs about $65 a night and I THINK the Gateway starts at around $40. You have to enter your branch of service and rate/rank. (I know you probably know all that but for everyone else :-D)
Theresa, if he is 801 he is staying in GL for the next phase. I am flying out about 9 sunday night, that was the easiest flight for me. Even if he has a bit of liberty on monday he can catch up at the PX, or NEX there, and settle in to the new quarters. I have to be back to work by 3 on monday, so I choose the late sunday flight.
Does anyone know which is the best place to stay the Navy Lodge or the Gateway Inn? My husband is Active Duty so we have Military IDs. We fly in on the Thursday before PIR but have to leave on Saturday morning.
YES!!! Received form letter yesterday. Ship 12 Division 23 anyone else out there?
not real sure when he leaves and where he is going. i guess i can stay overnight. there is always something to do in chicago. thanks.
wrwmom: They will have their flight schedule by PIR Day....airport destination as well.
