Here is a funny story I learned from reading that book. I read this joke and had already sent it to my son in a letter but didn't realize how funny it was until I read the book. OK here is the joke first - well it isn't really a joke it is funny story a recruit wrote home and it's true.
We interrupt this letter for a funny thing a recruit wrote home:
"WOW! Excitement just ensued! We had a fire drill just now, only I don't know if it was a drill because there was no RDC's and fire trucks came and I think it's kind of smokey, but I can't really see."

Then he goes on about his letter, and then:

"UPDATE: the fire alarm was set off in our compartment and I think *I* set it off. My bunkmate kept harassing me, saying my feet smelled so I sprayed hella foot spray and I guess the powder set it off"

Well I thought that was funny and in the weeks leading up to boot camp I had copied and pasted these into my word program and in my letters I have been sending these stories. Well in the read the book I found out that when they get to Boot Camp, they are initially given one sweat suit, one pair of shorts, one t-shirt, underwear, and one pair of socks until they start their real training. Now think about this they wear this day in and day out for 5 to 14 days. It does NOT get laundered. Some of the boys wash out their socks, others do not and apparently even though they shower, 3 minute showers doesn't do a whole lot, the sweat builds up in the clothes and they stink. They call these training day uniforms the smurf outfits. When I read that in the book I laughed so hard...can you imagine how bad the boys smelled...my guess is the girls probably washed out their undies and socks and things...but the boys most of them...I don't know!! Can you imagine getting close to them? They say they put them in a table in the corner for chow? Hmmm wonder why,,,,,lol!!!

Well they have competitions of some kind like when they have inspections on their ships and whoever gets the highest score I think wins the flag...and each division is under a great deal of pressure to win the flag...winning flags can help a division get a place in the hall of fame I think...that is how I understand it...remember I know only what I have read and researched so I could be very wrong
