My son will be going to A school in Connecticut after his PIR of 12/05.  Does anyone have a clue about Christmas leave/liberty?   or when the dates are made available?  I'd like to meet in in NYC and would like to get my plane tickets early.

Thanks

FYI. I checked with my hotel Holiday Inn Libertyville. They will allow posters on room doors only if they are hung using putty. NO tape or nails. The tacky putty can be purchased at any hardware store or craft store. I already have some which I use for some of my crafts. It's easy to use just pull off a piece knead it until soft then apply. So glad I asked

Kimberly68,

The Navy already provides them with a garment bag for their uniforms. All the Sailors traveling have a huge 50 lb seabag with all their gear in it, then a garment bag for their uniforms, and the black backpack where their cell phone, charger, laptop, a/c adapter, own comfy underwear, maybe favorite snacks--all this you bring to them at the airport.

My Sailor daughter got her own large black suitcase to replace the seabag when she was at A school.  I did not notice any parents bringing a new suitcase for their Sailors to switch to at the airport.

Ahhh, thanks, LoriM.....but I feel you have been helpful, especially on the FIT group!  I know those ladies have appreciated your expertise!  And having been a sailor yourself, you have info that we don't!

Kimberly:  Here is a link posted in the PAGES section, above and to the right, about things to do on Liberty.  The other N4Moms veterans may have other ideas to contribute too!  It was the dead of winter when we were there....cold outside!  So we just visited the Gurnee Mills Mall (close by and lots of sailors there) and drove around the area.

SixFlags will be closed during this time of year.

Kimberly, I agree with others, a watch is a good idea. For things to do there is a museum as you are walking into the PIR hall and there is another one on the A-school base as well as several others in the area. There is also a huge mall, Gurnee Mills mall that is huge and has lots of stores and restaurants and even a movie theater. If you want to get them luggage they can also use the NWU print luggage that is available in the NEX but they are given everything like that that they need for now. The bigger NEX off base is a great place to go shopping for souvenirs :)

Good morning everyone. I am so sorry I have been MIA. I just returned from Great Lakes for 7/7 PIR :) Two of the other PIR facebook group admins and myself went there to gather information to better help all of you get through the boot camp experience. We have some friends there who gave us a tour of the bases and see how it all works. It was amazing. We went to the blood drive and donated blood (my first time ever) lol.  We got to go to the NEX, we saw the photo lab, the phone banks, the chapel and we sat in the lobby of the Navy Lodge everyday greeting families as they arrived and talking to Sailors after PIR. We also went to Sarge's meet and greet and had a wonderful time. We went to several restaurants and toured several hotels to see where the best places to stay were and where to avoid. I even took the train into Chicago and then a cab to the aquarium and the Navy Pier. It was all so much fun and I am very pleased with the info we were able to get. I know it is going to help us help you even more than ever before. It was a great time :)

I know you sent it to Diannep however, my sailor would like gift cards for stores and restaurants near her base.  Yes a watch comes in handy as they are not to have their phones out in public unless standing or sitting still while in uniform. The other thing is luggage,, when traveling in uniform the are to have black luggage..  I am sure Diannep can add more to this,,she is awesome on this site with help. :)
