This is the final test for your recruits.  When they pass this, they are sailors and trade in their recruit cap for their sailor cap in a capping ceremony afterwards. The ship they do this on was designed by Disney, so it is very realistic. During…Continue

I am doing ok. Barely. I am terribly busy at work, which helps. I was probably more upset when he started talking about enlisting. After I thought about the whole military thing, I realized that he had an opportunity that he could not pass up. I realized that he has a lot of qualities that the Navy can develop and refine.

A few weeks before he left, we were chatting about one of his favorite subjects; food. I mentioned that he would get to try tons of different food while he is traveling around the world. He said that he was very excited. That's when I knew that everything would be ok.

Boot camp doesn't worry me much. Maybe I am saving my worries for better things. I know that there are reasons for making new recruits live through hell, but when they get into a dangerous situation, they will need the skills that are learned in BC. I wouldn't want my kid to work around someone who didn't do things the Navy way.

In the end, he is doing what he is supposed to do. He is leaving home, he has a job that can be a wonderful career. He is learning skills that can be useful throughout his entire life, and he is serving his country. My pride is getting me through.

I cant sleep.

They do get to keep their wallet, so no worries there.

Calling the RTC wont help you find out if your sailor is grad n go...your recruit will have to tell you that...and they will.  They haven't even written their first letter at this point in all liklihood so give them some time.  Hang in there all.  I know this is lots of information.

BTW postal.. how are you doing?  Did you have a hard time seeing his stuff?  I did...when I saw the shoes it brought tears to my eyes.

Comment by mamawalrus on December 17, 2010 at 2:53am

postal@ yes I believe they do get to keep that.. my son took his and it did not come back either.

Sailorgirl@ he will tell you before you get to PIR... just be sure to ask him when you write him and follow up with him as you get closer to PIR.

I opened "the box today". My sons wallet is not inside. Does this mean that he has

his wallet? I thought he would be sending everything home.

Jessica @ you confused me with your new pic,,, but I love it!! I have always loved the moon.

Comment by mamawalrus on December 17, 2010 at 1:34am

sailorsgirl@ if he is going for BUDS, he will move across the street there in GL after PIR,  he will attend prep school (Pre-Buds), once they feel he is ready and they have enough guys ready, they will then send them to Coronado to SEAL camp.. The time at Pre Buds can vary but I hear anywhere from 8 to 14 weeks.  Again there is not set time.

Your BF will be told if will be a G&G and if he is, he will move his stuff over right after PIR.  HE does not go to San Diego until he goes through Pre Buds there in GL's.  Does that make sense?

Also if you are confused on any Navy terminology, on the right hand side of the page there is the NAVY SPEAL box, it has a lady there. Just put your term in there and hit define.. it will give you the meaning of it.
