Hooray for all the phone calls! We got ours during a drive to the airport last night and I nearly got us all killed trying to get the button pushed! We heard all the same sorts of stuff y'all have posted, but there was one thing I tried to get more info on and am still confused. Putting it here because I'm proud and also so that Arwen might explain it to me more clearly than The Prince did:
His division has been "sponsored" by a dive company out of the west (Div 805 is all SpecOps guys -- Divers, SWCC, Seals, Air/Rescue, EOD). I can't remember the name of the company now (hubby wrote it down), but apparently this is a somewhat rare/prestigious opportunity--being sponsored. And he said something about "getting coins" and special t-shirts, etc. Arwen, do you know what it means? What are the responsibilities and/or benefits to a sponsorship? Will something different happen for them at PIR?
Ken, so glad you had a good call from your son. I am on the same high as you. Mine said that his brother division is 084 and they compete on everything, so they are getting close as well and just across the hall! He said something about ASMOD, but I really don't know what that is (my bad). He's been sick with the crud and got pink eye, but he sounded amazingly settled and grounded. He said he could earn more calls but I told him I would not expect to get one until right after BS21. He said for me to keep sending mail!! Life is good now ;-) P.S. Thanks for sharing!
Whew . . . home from work . . . a little more time to talk (type) ;-)
. . . haven't been in the best of moods in the last coupla days . . . snow kept the mailman away yesterday and I had to leave early for work today and it turns out they didn't deliver again because the city plow trucks left a 5' wall of hard-packed snow in front of our mailbox so the mailman didn't deliver . . . fortunately, from what I had heard here, I had an idea that the call may come today . . . my cell phone was completely charged and I had an extra battery in my pocket . . . just in case. It came earlier than I had expected, but everyone knew to leave me alone when the call came in! ;-)
He sounded great! AND THAT"S ALL THAT MATTERS!!!
The Cliffs Note version . . . He's fine there, it's boot camp and he doesn't expect it to be a picnic, he had 2 wisdom teeth pulled and while it sucked for about 5 hours, he made it through, got some rest and they gave him something for pain. He's made friends and a few very close friends. He's sleeping alright, eating good and did good in his first test . . . he said that the division got a flag for scholarship because their average was high enough on the first test. He said that they don't get to goof off or even talk a lot, so he's learned to keep his mouth shut . . . that alone amazes me! ;-)
He said that it's pretty easy to get ASMOD (then he asked if I knew what that meant? . . . of course I did, from here!) he said that he's not going to let that happen to him. He also said that he doesn't ask a lot of questions about after graduation because the RDC wants them to concentrate what they need to know NOW instead of what will/may happen later.
I told him about his families plans to be at PIR . . . we all know that he can only put 4 on the guest list, but there's 4 coming from his mom's side of his family and 7 from my side . . . we'll take our chances on getting in. We're all staying at the Residence Inn and we'll be together with him on Friday . . . everyone else leaves Saturday or Sunday, my girlfriend and I will stay until Tuesday morning so we can keep him company on Sunday & Monday . . . he did say that him and a few of his friends want to go to Chicago one day.
He said that they got fitted for their dress uniforms and he sounded very proud about it . . . I can't wait to see him.
We talked for 20-25 minutes, I asked him how long he had to talk and he wasn't sure . . . I had heard that it might be between 30 minutes to an hour, so I let him go to make some other calls . . . I know he got through to his sister.
I've been sending a letter every day with pictures on them . . . he loves them and wants more. I wish that he could call or write more often, but this call can/will hold me for a while, because he sounded so, so GOOD!
A senior division means those who are have passed a mid-point of training. They have more privileges than junior divisions, and are given the chance to buy goodies and are more likely to earn a phone call.
Because they spent more than two weeks in processing, they got a lot of the daily grind stuff done before day 1-1, so they are ahead in their training.
