Arianna, they are given faux promotions, they get to wear the rank of petty officer (or chief), but it isn't the real thing. It's just a way for recruits to get used to "reading" rate marks on uniforms, and identifying which recruits are "in charge" when the RDCs are away.

There is real responsibilty involved, but it is far from the high-stakes world that they will experience on a ship.

Sorry, I wish I knew but i have no idea. I do know that the jobs they get while in boot camp change quite a bit. They even get "fired" from a job for n reason at all except to see how someone else would do it. They seem to move them around a lot.

my boyfriend told me he got a promotion to Starboard Watch...he said he is in charge of making the schedule of when they stand watch, overseeing their performance, making sure they say and do the right stuff and write in the deck log correctly...so I understand what he does but I don't understand what it means. Does this mean he is a petty officer or what?

Lorna, this is random but if you rearrange your name you have both my name and my daughters name in your name lol. kind of funny. Okay I must be really tired now lol. Have a great night everyone. Glad so many are getting calls, that is so exciting :)

That is so sad about the call. I think he will be able to call back so don't beat yourself up about it. Tomorrow is another day. Keep your spirits up and have faith! Best wishes!

I got a call from my husband today, but the phone cut off after 6 minutes!!! I was so upset, but not really for myself...for him! I just wanted to know that he was okay and doing well, which he is. I just felt sad that he couldn't hear our little boy babbling a little longer. I guess his phone card cut out and when he tried to call collect it didn't go through (I got a voicemail asking me to press 1!!! which I would have gladly done!). Ahhh, I almost had a anxiety attack!!! I hope he can call back again...I did get to hear that he is 2nd in command of his division and I told him how proud I was...so hopefully that was enough to get him by for the next few weeks. When will I stop feeling so sad!!! :(

Thanks, Arwen. You ROCK!

RDCs choose the recruits for the jobs. All RDCs have different criteria and purposes for choosing specific recruits, so there's no way to tell what they may have seen in your recruit. Sometimes they even choose at random, just to see how things sort out. It's all a head game at boot camp.

Arwen- do the volunteer or are they chosen???
