I got this today and thought it applied all too well:

I am really confused by some of the information you all have heard about Grad and Go. From my experience with my daughter who had PIR July 23 any of them can be Grad and Go. It doesn't matter what city they are going to. I have never heard of only getting to see them for 15 minutes. Our daughter was a Grad and Go and was leaving on a chartered flight. We had less time with her than any other families had with their sailors (other than the 160 sailors who were also on the Chartered flight). If they are going to A-school in a different city and are Grad and Go you will see them for a few min after PIR and then they go to their ship to pic up their pictures and they come back to you. We waited in the parking lot near the church for our sailor. We then were able to leave the base with her. We went to the hotel for a little while and talked and hung out. We then went to lunch, then to the mall, and after that we went out to dinner and then back to the hotel. We took her back to the base at 7:30 and went to the NEX and bought some souvenirs. We had her for almost 8 hours that day. On Saturday you can meet them at the airport and hang out with them until time for their flight. Sometimes that could be an hour or two and sometimes it could be 5 or 6 hours or even longer. Especially in the winter with bad weather and flight delays. If they are leaving on a chartered flight you won't see them at the airport. They go straight from the base to the jet. This doesn't happen very often. I have been on this site since April and have only heard of it happening 1 time and that was when it happened to my daughter. If they are grad and go and staying in GL for A-school then you see them for a few min and then they have to move all their stuff to the other base across the street. This takes 4 or 5 hours. After they get everything moved they call you to come pick them up. You get them the rest of the day, all day on Saturday and all day on Sunday. Some of them will get to stay with you for the whole weekend including nights. They may have a short watch at some point during the weekend but as soon as it is over you pick them back up.

I will add this: My daughter was Grad and Go, left on that chartered flight and we only had her for 7 or 8 hours total. I drove the whole way from NC, it took 16 hours to get there and I drove the whole way back which due to flooding in Chicago took 18 hours to get back home. IT WAS WORTH IT. The PIR was amazing, I would not have missed it for the world and if I had it to do again, knowing I would only have a few hours with her I would still go. I hope this helps.

Thank you all so much. I really appericate the help. I have not gotten a letter (other than the form letter) yet. But I need to remind her to let me know if she is GnG as soon as she knows.

I have asked the Station up the in the Great Lakes a few times this question, here's what GradNGo is, they are the ones who are going to "A" school in the Great Lakes. Only them go on Fridays. Now if they are Saturday departure then that does not count as GradNGo. Though they said if they are Saturday departure, we will get most the day with them on Saturday and we can meet them at the airport and give them their cell, laptop, and some civilian clothes.

lindaf:  Your recruit should know where his A School is.  So ask in a letter or phone call!

I don''t know if I agree with you, Arwen, on missing PIR.  We had 10 hours with our son...and that was wonderful.  Others went to the airport the next day...maybe you are saying that true GradNGos leave on Friday, which I understand.  But apparently the powers that be at RTC are telling the ones leaving on Sat. that they are GradNGos because that is what my son had told me.  Although getting the PIR DVD is a must in my opinion, it is not the same as being there...I think that those in doubt need to leave the decision up to their recruit...because ultimately it is about what he/she wants! I have read where some have told their family to skip PIR and come to A School for a weekend.

NavyGirl:  She could be either.  If she is GradNGo to GL, she will move over there for 3-5 hours right after PIR.  She will then use her phone card (no cell yet) to call you to pick her up and you MIGHT have full weekend Liberty with her (overnights).  If she is NOT GradNGo to GL, she will remain on RTC for a few days, and will have daytime liberty with you, returning to base each night.  GradNGo would allow you to give her cell and laptop after she is moved in....but if she is on RTC for a few days, no cell or laptop...but you can store for her in a locker (www.thelockandgo.com) nearby to retrieve once she is moved.  Hope this helps!

I know this is probably a qquestion that has been asked and answered before. But Im confused about grad n go. My daughters A school will be at Great Lakes. I'm not sure if that means she will be GnG. If someone can help me out I really would appericate it. Thanks
