Renick, if your sailor is GnG to a Great Lakes school, he will spend about 4-5 hours moving to his new "home" immediately after PIR, then he will be released for the weekend liberty. They tend to have more liberal liberty rules than those who stay at boot camp, but not by a lot.

However, since he's in one of the higher number divisions, it's doubtful he will be GnG.

The Ramada Meet and Greet is for all families who are there for PIR. Many of them are not members of N4M and have never heard of it. It is not an "anyone" event, it's only for PIR folks, who pretty much take over the hotel every Thursday.

Some N4M PIR groups schedule a "private" M&G at Anastasia's, a pizza place near the RTC, either instead of the Ramada event, or immediately after it. Basically they do it for the price of ordering plenty of pizza to go around. They have two back rooms for smaller gatherings, and one large front room. Occasionally N4M private gatherings have taken over the whole place (150 N4Ms!)

@cherrystreet:  BS21 is Battle Stations 21. It's like a "final." It's their practical test. The one they train for most of the time leading up to it. If they pass it, they go from being a "recruit" to being a "sailor!" They trade in their RECRUIT ballcap for their NAVY ballcap and it's actually their official graduation. PIR is the event they put on, for show, for their families, etc., See below!

Battle Stations 21 is a 12-hour grueling rite-of-passage aboard the Navy’s 210 foot long (3/4 scale) destroyer, the U.S.S. Trayer, a simulator first commissioned in 2007 and loaded with Hollywood-style special effects.

Events through the night include missile attacks as well as fires and flooding from undersea mines. It’s designed to replicate terrorist attacks, battle damage, and at-sea disasters. Every recruit must pass battle stations before becoming a sailor.

PIR 2-18-2011 is a GREAT group!  I am so happy to have a good group. It has made such a big difference in a very short time! Got my letter and now thinking about PIR. I thought we were driving, but now my hubby is talking about flying. My other son and his wife wanted to go (she does not fly). I don't want to leave them out, but I want what is best for us as well. Do the hotels have bedrooms? If there are 5 adults, which hotel would accomodate that many or should we get 2 rooms. Also I've read that the Ramada Meet and Greet is not just for Navy families, but for anyone staying at the hotel. Does that mean it is just like a hospitality welcome with 2 free drinks, like some hotels do?.  In any case, I'm excited to be making plans to be there and see my son graduate! Ok, now I'm getting teary thinking about him in his uniform. I will want to PDA and will have to control my hugs!

@Arwen. if my son is GL A school, will I get to see him Fri, Sat and Sun? You are a treasure chest of info! Thanks as always!

What is BS21?   Surely the BS stands for something other than what immediately comes to mind.  THX.

Wait, a 900 division in Ship 2 ???? That's not expected! Unless they're doing some kind of maintenance on Ship 6, or are waiting for a senior division to leave and make room for them. Hmmm...

Regarding waiting for orders, it's all a paperwork game. Each sailor has to be matched with the right A-school orders, a flight, and they have to make sure the school they are going to has enough room to house the student sailor. This takes time and manpower. They don't cut the orders until they have completed BS21, and it takes time to issue them one-by-one. They go through the divisions, starting with the low number and working to the high number. It simply takes time.

Also, last year the divisions graduated and PIR'd early. Divisions normally PIR  on or around day 8-5 (week 8, day 5). But because of the long processing period, some end up doing only 7 weeks of actual training (six weeks before BS21). So, they finish out part of that last week after PIR.

So while they wait for their orders, they finish the training that they couldn't do before PIR. Usually it's instructions for sailors on the rules for travel, how to report to a new duty station, how to pack a seabag properly, etc.

I just read on the other board that Residence Inn has a grad packet special, but when I talked to them earlier, they didn't mention it.  I think I'll call be and ask about it.  We will have five people and the two bedrooms, two bathrooms would be really much better for us.   Especially because being in closed quarters with my mom drives me a little crazy.  Anyway, if we can get group rates anywhere, I'd be interested because like I said, I can change my reservations.

I'm staying at the Ramada.  I looked at the Residence Inn, but a little pricey for a single mom.  It looks really nice though...but the Ramada will be great too.
