Also, the holidays also mean that there are a lot of screwed-up schedules. A lot of the people who do the paperwork are on holiday leave, so recruits may have to wait longer to get things done.
Your recruiter should have told you to have at least 2 months worth of expenses in the bank before your recruit left, because the whole system is a bit slow, and they don't rush things if a recruit's family gets into financial difficulty.
There are paychecks on the 1st and the 15th of each month.
However, the first paycheck is eaten up by expenses at boot camp. The recruit never sees the money, it is deducted from their first paycheck, which is usually pretty much the whole thing.
The Navy pays for their uniforms, but recruits have to pay for everything else, including running shoes, underwear, socks, shampoo,
toothbrushes, toothpaste, shavers... anything that they use that isn't
part of the "sailor's seabag" set of uniforms. It adds up to about
$500, +/- $100 depending on the season and individual recruit
preferences. They're taken to the mini NEX (convenience store)
regularly to shop for basic needs.
Usually the first real paycheck arrives in the bank account 4-6 weeks after arrival at boot camp. Your sailor will be using some of this
money for continued expenses, so when it does arrive, try to leave at
least $200 in the account for his use. If he can't buy what he was
instructed to purchase, he can get in a lot of trouble.
He didn't even leave me a voice mail. He spoke with his parents for 20 minutes, yet didn't leave me just a 30 second voicemail. When he left me a voice mail from the airport he didn't even say "I love you." I just feel like I've been forgotten.
He also let me know that they haven't even taken our bank account information. The recruiter promised us that our first pay check would be here January 1 and my husband told his mother on the phone that nobody has even taken down our bank account info yet so we won't get paid until at least the 15th. Our Tricare hasn't kicked in yet either so I can't afford to go to the doctor or get my medicine filled.
It's hard enough as it is without the money stress. I do, however, feel very blessed that we have family that will help us with rent and utilities for the time being.
I'm just crossing my fingers for a call tomorrow.
I'm so upset. I just found out that I missed his call today. He called this morning. I am so hurt and upset. I am totally not in the Christmas spirit. I am going over to my dad's house to open gifts but I couldn't care less about what's under the tree.
I really hope he can call again tomorrow. He spoke with his mom after he tried to call me but I missed his call.
I feel so defeated. I really just want to go to bed and sleep through Christmas.
First of all merry Christmas Eve....hope you have a nice holiday and know that your recruits will have a holiday tomorrow...like a Sunday and to them that will be awesome...plus a special menu...whcih as soon as it is posted I will send your way.
Untamed...glad you liked the questionaires.
I just want to mention how proud I am of all of you...I am reading through the postings and you all seem to have heeded the warnings about your names and recruits pictures...way to go...it is such a simple thing that can make such a big difference for your recruit...lol!!!!
