Hello. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Arwen. My son, Chris, went to boot camp on Dec. 16, 2009 and PIR'd on Feb. 19, 2010. I went through this exactly one year ago. Chris went to IT school, was released from school with only one day remaining, then went as an undesignated sailor to the USS Denver, stationed in Japan. He has been to Seoul, South Korea, Subic Bay, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, has been part of an "invasion force," gone through a hurricane, provided aid to hurricane survivors, and one of his primary duties is to helm (steer) the ship while at sea.
That's one year in the life of a new sailor. Imagine where YOUR sailor will be in a year.
I am also a Navy veteran, I joined the Navy in 1988 and was on the USS McKee, a submarine tender (repair ship) in San Diego. My husband Mike also served, as a submariner on the USS Louisville. We met on the docks, literally. His brother recently retired as a chief. And my younger son, Sean, is in the process to join. He turned 18 earlier this month and recently graduated from high school. We also have a 13 year old daughter who is simply surrounded by the Navy.
I am here to help out when I can, offer my experience and knowledge. You many not always like what I have to say, but I will not knowingly steer you wrong.
You are all Training Group 13. You may have as few as 5 divisions, or as many as 17 (the smallest and largest groups I have seen). We should know Monday, Dec. 27 exactly how many, and which divisions will be in this group. It will be posted on the Great Lakes website.
Divisions are randomly assigned according to recruits arrival. Divisions start with 88 recruits (no, I don't know how they arrived at that number, and they've been using it for at least 25 years), and may shrink as some recruits drop out along the way.
There are 12 divisions to a ship, (barracks), where they live, eat, and take classes. They are assigned chronologically as divisions are assigned.
Women are assigned to co-ed divisions - half women and half men. There are always either 2 or 4 co-ed divisions in a training group. They operate in pairs. The women from two divisions share a barracks, and the men share another. They train as a division, but live separately (just like the fleet). All other divisions are male-only. There are no all-female divisions, I don't know why.
Divisions with numbers from 001-799 are "regular" divisions with a random mix of recruits.
Divisions with numbers from 800-899 are Special Operations divisions - also known as pre-BUDS. They are in training to be SEALs, underwater demolition, divers, etc.
Divisions with numbers from 900-999 are performance divisions. They form the recruit band and choir, the flag team, the rifle drill team, and serve as guides for PIR visitors.
Recruits from this training group will begin their first day of training in the week of Dec. 27. The first 2 divisions start training on Monday, the next two on Tuesday, etc. If there are more than 10 divisions in a group, they train 3-divisions per day. More than 15 divisions (I've only seen it happen once) and four divisions train together per day.
Welcome to N4M's I hope you are all doing well. I know it seems like boot camp will last forever but it will pass quicker than you think. In no time at all you will be making plans and reservation for PIR. If you have questions ask, we are here to help you. My daughter had PIR in July, my son-in-law had PIR in Oct. I am on here every day and I am happy to help in any way I can. Some of you have probably already heard of me lol. And just for the record I am not usually on here this late. I am waiting up to see the Eclipse :) I hope you all have a great week and a very Merry Christmas.
Hello everyone! Navymom99 please let me know when you get your letter. We are out of state at the moment. My husband is hunting and may pass by our house tomorrow to check the mailbox. If he gets anything he will let me know. I'll post as soon as i hear. Nice to meet everyone.
Can anyone tell me what the different DIV are for. Is it based on the job they are going into or is it something else?

Well, no letter yet but since his division is 081, I'm guessing Nate's PIR date will be the 18th. He left on the 14th and I see that some on left on the 13th got their letter today. Maybe tomorrow!
