Ann Marie:  I would take his electronics to PIR just so he can enjoy them while there.  Then if he decides not to take them with him, you can mail at a later date.  But I would have them in a plain black backpack ready for him to take if he changes his mind!

nikosmom:  I mailed my son his phone once he was settled on A School base.  The sailors have LOTS to carry to A School. Their seabag, garment bag...both quite big.  We tell any who want to give their sailors some personal items at the airport to put them in a plain black backpack.  They are usually allowed to have cellphones right away...in most cases...but best to wait if there is any question.  My son made it to his A School with nothing but a phone card and that worked fine until he received his cell phone in the mail.

Correct, TxLadyJane.  It is up to the airlines to issue the gate passes....and to how many in your group.  Hopefully, there are no issues since Chicago loves its sailors and has been doing this for a long time!

From what I understand at the Airport we will need to arrive with them as they have to report into the USO.  Different cars but around the same time.  Once they check in we can go with them to the ticket counter and get that pass from the airline attendant.  Then we can go with them back to the gate area.  Please correct me if I am wrong, this is only what I have been able to gather from post on here.

my son said he can't take anything to A school, I guess they have to wait until they get settled, or something.

I heard they can be given them at the airport if they are flying.. (at least, that is what my wife is having me do).. if he's worried, you can always mail them to him in a week =)

My son is being a turkey, he won't let me bring his electronics. He is afraid they won't let him take them to A school, but I was told by his recruiter he could bring them. He told me his RDC said better to be safe than sorry. Anyone else hear this? Bummer!!

diannep: your advice worked for me. just got off the phone with PAO and have the new password :). Thank you for everyone's help! Looking back on the time I've been waiting to see my sailor, I never imagined in a million years how helpful & invaluable this site would be to me. Everything was so confusing in the beginning. Now it's like a second language using military lingo/jargon, being ok with plans changing, etc etc. It's given me such accurate "landmarks" to ask about, look forward to & plan appropriately for (PIR trip). Chicago bound in 24 hours!!!

Leaving in the morning.  Can't wait to hug my SAILOR.  Congrats to all the new SAILORS and can't wait to meet everyone.  I have a question if anyone knows, can you buy things in the NEX, or do you have to be with your sailor.  Just thought we could shop around while waiting for him to move.  Just wondering? Hope to see everyone Thurs. night.  Ship 12 Div. 92
