Hi Alisonsailormom!  I'll let you know what my son said as soon as I get my letter - hopefully today when I get my mail after work.  Regarding your last comment, from what I've read in earlier posts on this site, it sounds like it's less time and easier to use the hotel shuttle's instead of driving on base.  If you're that close though, you might not want to add the expense.

ashlove2317, My son also arrived in bootcamp on the 12th. While I did not rec a phone call, I finally rec his first letter yesterday and his form papers today. It will come. keep your chin up! I wrote my son everyday until I rec his address. This made for a pretty lengthy letter.. Remember, he is missing you as well and will be looking forward to your handwriting. You will make it through. It is very difficult but you will make it. Stay positive.

Has anyone gotten letters yet, our recruiter just told me that my husband wont be able to send any for at least two weeks. My heart is crushed. Just the little bit of info has made me feel like its jan 12th all over and i dont know how ill make it thru this. I was really looking forward to seeing his handwriting. :( I am praying that someone tells me that this is bs.

We stayed at the Navy Lodge. I called them direct and told them I had a sailor graduating bootcamp. They reserved the room in my sailors name and I gave them my debit card number. I don't know if they normally even ask someone's age. I do know they didn't ask me. If they don't ask I wouldn't offer that info. I would call the car rental places and ask if they rent to a married military family who is under 21. I have heard that there are some who do but you do have to buy the extra insurance.

Amy if you are married and you have a dependent ID card, you should call the Navy Lodge *today*. They will rent you a room with proper identification.

If your sister decides not to come, I want to tell you you can trust the taxis. Just make sure you *call* the taxi you plan to ride in and they come pick you up. Taxis in the Chicago area are heavily regulated and I have never, in the thousand years I lived there, heard of anything bad happening to anyone riding in a cab. Once in a while a yahoo might try to swipe your credit card number but that's really about it. In each cab there is something called a medallion and drivers pay through the nose to get one. Picture ID of the driver should be displayed. It's possible I guess someone could masquerade as a driver, but if you call ahead, get a cab number, and get in that cab, you really are okay.

Hey, I will have a two month old when I go up for the graduation, I live in Oklahoma and decided to fly, I am 19 and I know some places will let you get a hotel room, but sometimes it's hard to. I'm really glad my mom is going with me because I don't think I could do it on my own. I think flying would be easier, but I wouldn't want to be taken around in a taxi the whole time either.

Can an 18 year old even get a hotel room? I know down here you have to be 21. I hate how difficult this is...
Comment by Amymichelle09(Ship 12,Div. 100) on January 21, 2011 at 12:30am
The biggest problem I suppose is that if I fly I would need to have a taxi take me everywhere and I am just not comfortable with just me and the baby in some strangers car. Btw I am only 18 that is why I don't think I could rent one. Right now I am trying to get my little sister in law to make the drive with me. She doesn't have her license so I would drive the whole time but she could help with feeding the baby and changing her.

Hi Amy :). The train would be much more comfortable in my opinion, but if you buy your ticket soon flying is about three hundred dollars also, at least from Dallas. If you had to drive it you would probably be fine, but that's a long trip for a little one and if you've never driven up here before you might hit some weather - just  more of a headache.

I  don't know if there is a shuttle from your hotel to the airport. From both airports you could take a taxi to your hotel and the whole trip would be far less than half the time.

I like the train because it's never anywhere near as crowded and there are far fewer secuirity hassles and rarely ever a real weather delay. From downtown Chicago Union Station there is a metra line right across the street with a train that goes straight to GL -- or you could cab it once again.

All three are doable but it just seems like driving a thousand miles with a newborn and *back again* would be totally exhausting for both you guys.

Wow Amymichelle- That is a very hard question. I guess there are pros and cons to all the choices. Will you have someone else going with you to help you? How far in advance can you leave? Do you have to be back by a certain day? So many things to consider. My biggest concern about driving would be the weather. It would not be good to get stuck on the interstate in a snow storm with a baby. I drove there from NC in July. It was supposed to be a 12 hour drive and it took 16 hours to get there with traffic problems and 18 hours to get back. I didn't have near as far to go as you do. If it were me I would probably fly. But of course that is because I did all the driving myself 34 hours of driving and about 10 hours of sleep in 3 days. I don't think I would ever go that far again and drive unless I had a lot more time to make the trip.
