Hi Alisonsailormom! I'll let you know what my son said as soon as I get my letter - hopefully today when I get my mail after work. Regarding your last comment, from what I've read in earlier posts on this site, it sounds like it's less time and easier to use the hotel shuttle's instead of driving on base. If you're that close though, you might not want to add the expense.
Amy if you are married and you have a dependent ID card, you should call the Navy Lodge *today*. They will rent you a room with proper identification.
If your sister decides not to come, I want to tell you you can trust the taxis. Just make sure you *call* the taxi you plan to ride in and they come pick you up. Taxis in the Chicago area are heavily regulated and I have never, in the thousand years I lived there, heard of anything bad happening to anyone riding in a cab. Once in a while a yahoo might try to swipe your credit card number but that's really about it. In each cab there is something called a medallion and drivers pay through the nose to get one. Picture ID of the driver should be displayed. It's possible I guess someone could masquerade as a driver, but if you call ahead, get a cab number, and get in that cab, you really are okay.
Hi Amy :). The train would be much more comfortable in my opinion, but if you buy your ticket soon flying is about three hundred dollars also, at least from Dallas. If you had to drive it you would probably be fine, but that's a long trip for a little one and if you've never driven up here before you might hit some weather - just more of a headache.
I don't know if there is a shuttle from your hotel to the airport. From both airports you could take a taxi to your hotel and the whole trip would be far less than half the time.
I like the train because it's never anywhere near as crowded and there are far fewer secuirity hassles and rarely ever a real weather delay. From downtown Chicago Union Station there is a metra line right across the street with a train that goes straight to GL -- or you could cab it once again.
All three are doable but it just seems like driving a thousand miles with a newborn and *back again* would be totally exhausting for both you guys.
