One thing that we found out after we were there:  they do NOT have Infant or Toddler seats in the shuttle/cabs  ....we brought our 2 & half yr old granddaughter with us, we rented a Dodge Caravan Van , we had 4 adults and the child, so we had enough seat belts when we picked up our Sailor after PIR!  The Lady at our Springhill Suites the night before told us that she had seen some dangerous scenes with no child restraint seating in the shuttles, so she advised that we drive our van.  Some of shuttles may have them but we for sure did not want to take the chance with our toddler! She did wonderful @ PIR !!!  We were so proud of her!  There was lots going on that entertained her, she loved the crowd and being with us and when she saw her uncle Zac, it was worth it all!  We were so glad that we chose to drive to PIR, it worked out very well!  We had NO problems!  It did help when we would talk to our son or get letters from him to find out when he would graduate, etc.  He was glad that I had lots of info. on where we could eat and how to get there.  We had a GPX that we could take to our hotel room and program the night before .... I had lots of GPX addresses so we could go where we wanted when we got ready to eat.  We usually ate around the Gurnee Mills Mall Area:  Chili's, Ruby Tuesdays, Out Back Steaks, Red Lobster, Cracker Barrel & Jimmy Johns, etc. Six Flags opens soon and that will complicate the traffic situation in that area. Also have lots of change for toll roads.

Brandis mom-I know exactly what you are saying.  I got goosebumps reading what you wrote bc I did the say thing.  I held it and cried without opening it.  I felt like I had a piece of her!  You are so in the right place bc we are all going through it.  I thought it sounded crazy too when I was saying it, but reading it doesn't sound crazy at all!  I'm so glad you got that moment of peace and contentment.  For a bit I finally felt like I knew she was ok!  Good feeling!!

My letter finally arrived, was so excited just wanted to hold the letter and not open it at first, cause the longer it was left unopened it meant it would last longer, I know does not make too much sense, but it just seemed that if I left the letter inside and just stared at the envelope, the feeling of having my daughter close at hand would last longer.  She says she is doing fine and that she is being fed decent food and that she loves us and of course it included the PIR date and her address which of course we already knew, but just to see her handwriting was enough for me, it made it seem a bit better and I know if she can do what she is doing, I can make it as well and be happy for her decision to follow in her dads footsteps. But I still miss her, it is just so hard to think of them all being so grown up already.  Oh well, the time will pass fast and then it will be PIR time and we can hug her and tell her how much we love her and how proud we are of her.

Just a reminder to the new ones that have joined us - please do not use first names or last names, you may use the first initial but that is all.

Anytime any of you need to vent or need support this is the place to come as we know what you are feeling and what you are going through, do not  - I repeat do not vent or let on to your recruit that you are struggling with any part of this as it puts unnecessary stress on them, come here to us.
Comment by ochaos on March 31, 2011 at 6:43pm
Yes, you will be surprised by how much some of them write.  I never expected to get much from my recruit but I got one every week and they were long and neat, his siblings kept saying that someone else must be writing them because they were to easy to read.

ColoradoConnie: Yes, you can send paper, envelopes, stamps in a larger envelope if you like.  You would be surprised how many who don't like to write letters become letter writers in bootcamp!  My son was one of them!  :-)
