HA!  My son PIRed Feb 2010.  Right after JessicaBSailor's son did.  So we have been helping out on the site since our sons were there.  We have gathered lots of info in that time!  Of course, they CHANGE it on us sometimes....UGH!  But we try to keep it updated.  Jessica, Janlee, Lala, and I all have stationed sailors and help out on the groups as veteran moms.

No, the only water your hubby would have seen may have been the pool???  :-)  But Lake Michigan is VERY close to the base so you must go see it while there!

You can book your hotel early...they have liberal cancellation policies, some up to the day of arrival.  And the ones with larger suites (like Residence) tend to fill up sooner.

You sure sound like you have all of this down! Have you done this before? I need to get a few things together with the hubby and B's gf before finalizing reservations, but will try to book by the end of this week or begining of next.... I like to get things like that out of the way sooner than later. My husband went to Great Lakes when he was a recruit so I am sure he will want to drive around an see how much it ha changed. He said that he never saw any water when he was there!! LOL

No, no sailors can come, ColoradoConnie.  You will do what we all do when we got there...drove around the outside of the base, several times...knowing that they are "in there" but we can't get to them yet!  HA!  My older son thought I was nuts...it's a female thing, I guess, he just didn't get it!  The MeetNGreet is for all in the families (children too!) to come to.  By the time you get to it, you will feel like you know all of the ladies on here so well.  These groups become so close and so friendly...it is truly a gift!

diannep- Thanks for the info on the meetNgreet! I know that I would enjoy that alot! I love meeting people and now getting to know and meet so many folks that I have so much in common with it will be a good time for sure. Do you know will our SR's be able to attend or will that happen after PIR?

Thanks navyvet!  B's scores were high enough he could have chosen anything he wanted ...he chose avionics. Plus because he has a degree he has been given a higher rate (rank) he should come out of BC as an E3 and possibly an E4 after A school! I cant even begin to express our pride in him! He was in band as well since the 5th grade, plying first chair trombone in pep, marching and jazz bands. He was ranked #1 in the state of Colorado his Junior and Senior years. Plus he used to DJ to raise extra $$$..I cant wait to get that first personal letter from him to get all the details! Have any of your kids been granted an extra phone call or even computer access? B's gf called and said she had gotten a call Sat. afternoon! It was a very quick call like the one we got the first night, but at least she got to hear his voice!!

ColoradoConnie:  A close family friend of ours went in at 30 also...he is the one who influenced my son's decision to join.  My son joined a yr after this friend did and they started bc exactly a yr apart.  My son went to bc when 23 (he is almost 25 now)

Yes, there is a MeetNGreet held for each PIR (grad) group.  They have PIR groups graduate each week usually, but occasionally skip a week.  This MeetNGreet is held at the Ramada Inn Waukegan, is free to all Navy families attending PIR the next day (not just N4Moms members) and is from 6-8 pm.  A great time to meet everyone on here!

I would like to "plug" the Residence Inn Waukegan for the hotels.  Stayed there a year ago and it was great (got rave reviews last week from those who attended PIR...check out the 3/25 PIR group's comments).  It has the PIR shuttle (actually taxis) that take you to and from PIR (sailor comes back with you), it is about 4.5 miles from the base, it is in a quiet area near an office park, it is PET FRIENDLY so you can bring pets if driving for your sailor to love on, they have a free hot buffet breakfast in the lobby each day, they have 2 bdr 2 bth suites, or studios, all with full kitchens if you want to cook for your sailor, outdoor pool, fitness room.  We used our AAA discount when there, but they have a Navy grad rate too.  So keep it in mind.  It is near the Walmart shopping center which has a couple of restaurants and also has the Courtyard and Springhill Suites next to it...all 3 hotels are Marriotts and all have the PIR shuttle.

My son was in Marching Band all 4 years of high school, he is percusian has been involved in music since 5th grade, I don't know if I would have had the guts to change everything at 30 but it really sounds like your son has his head on his shoulders and would definetly take the leadership role you are talking about. My son definetly scored well on his ASVAB he will be going onto Nuke school after boot camp my next thing to worry about :-)

Thanks for all the good information mruland I will definetly be looking at the Days Inn then this afternoon after I get off from work lol
