Hi and welcome Grasshopper!  My son, Jamie, is a Corpsman on Capo and has been there since Dec. 29, 2010, so he's still a newby!  Jamie had to buy a new phone over there and pay for service there.  He does call from the cell phone, but he said it eats a lot of minutes.  I guess Italians don't rely on their phones like we Americans do because he said there's not as many features.  He also purchased Magic Jack, but it only works when he has it hooked into his laptop.  I've tried calling it a few times since he's got it set up with a local number here, but I never get through.  We use skype, Facebook and email to talk for the most part.  He also has a Mustang that he left home and ended up buying a motorcyle over there from another Sailor.  I believe he said he put liability insurance on it and that was the only kind of insurance they offer, but I could be wrong on that.  He was able to keep his Georgia license.  He lives on base and has a 50" TV he bought over there.  He left one at home also!!  I guess it's easier since he went to Italy right after all his training was done and it's his first duty station.  Just yell if you have any questions!!

Insurance is very cheap out there and you can get gas coupons which help a lot, they are drive like nuts, LOL  But they drive like nuts here in Chicago also.  Test is real ez, Stephen thought so too.

Yes he is right, they are all over, when we went to visit they were everywhere.  I am sure he will love it  there.  Capo is the smaller base for single sailors, the other base Suport Side is the nicer base, bigger and has married sailors there. The NEX is real big, but the bases are ok!

I'm not sure that he knows yet.  He just found out yesterday.  He's an MA and in Norfolk he's been on waterside with harbor patrol as a coxswain.  He's not sure yet if that's what he'll be doing over there or actual patrol as he's been told that the MA's do the patrol on base there and not civilan police like they do here stateside.

Hi and welcome.  My son bought a car over there.  He also bought a bed and TV.  You can buy a lot of items from sailors that are leaving for a good price.  My son also got his phone there and paid through skype he got a great rate on his minutes.  We use skype a lot.  It is beautiful over there and many wonderful places to visit. My son is an IT and had worked two floor underground, no windows. LOL  What base will he be on?

Thanks Carrie...Do they have to get a driver's license over there?  What about car insurance and if so how expensive is it?  I'm assuming his car insurance here would not cover a car he might buy over there.  Not sure what he will do since he's already making car payments on a car here...don't think he wants to have two car payments.  Thanks for the information though.  I know we have several months but I also know they will fly by! :)

Just found out that my son will be going to Naples in June for 2 years.  He's an MA and currently an E3 but just took the test for E4.  We will not know until Nov if he passed or not.  Any information or tips to prepare would be greatly appreciated!!  For example, should he try to take his cell phone with him?  What about things like his X-Box and t.v.?  Will he need a car over there?  He has his car on base in Norfolk now and is completely dependent on his car!  Thanks for any help you may be able to offer!

Yes we took the train glad Stephen was with us, they do there tickets different there and I got stuck by the police because no one punched my ticket after I got off the train, LOL only could happen to me.  I know it is hard when you are coming in for family events there is no time for anything else.

I found out it's best if you use a credit card overseas a couple weeks ago when the attorney I work for traveled to Brussels and London.  Really learned a lot about the train system over there also.  Amazing is all I have to say.  I will look you up for that coffee if I end up going to the wedding!  I have such a large family that I have to pick and choose the weddings I go to because of the cost of traveling.  And they're all in and around Chicago!
