Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Sorry to jump in like this, but I just got an advertising email from this group claiming to be from "Bettie C. Jones".  I'm sure that is against the N4M rules.

Ny son is home for a short visit before ECS.  It's been a very happy weekend.  He's staying with his girlfriend but I've seen him everyday.  It was fun tonight when he stopped by the house to pick  up a movie he and his buddy were looking at what I call "My Command Post" in his room.  I have one entire wall dedicated to a US map and another one that is a world map.  These are giant, large as the wall and I've posted where he's been so far and tracking his destinations.  He enjoyed looking at it tonight with his friend as he showed us where he was about to go.   I felt like my little home command post was really useful.  I am feeling happier than I have since Christmas.  Thank you God for good days like this.

Debbie-I don't mean to be rude but posting of dates is in violation of OPSEC. It can put your son in harms way when traveling home. Please remove your comment from the page. I am sorry to hear that he was unable to get a job that he would like and isn't re-enlisting. I wish good luck to him!

I am hoping someone can answer this.  Why can't/don't we send our American troops that are getting paid with American money to help American disaster areas such as Alabama?

Good news everyone.  I did hear from my son and from the homeport liaison.  I did get the info I wanted and was very appreciative for it.  My son is very good about keeping in contact and keeping me informed, so the fact that he hadn't was really worrying me.  He said he just is having a hard time getting around on a full leg cast and crutches...understandable.  He is also working a lot, so he's tired too.  Thanks for all the info.  We do have a POA, so if needed, we would be covered.

Again, thanks for all the info!!  I really appreciate the support of his group!!

Denise, we took all that up with an attorney before he even left for BC.  There was no way I was going to not be able to help if no son could speak for himself.  But I do appreciate you reminding us to take care of these important issues.

ktssong welcome to Lucky11. My son isn't too far ahead of your bee...he joined 11 just as they were returning home so he hasn't been on a deployment yet. I got a chance to go down to Gulfport for a brief visit in early April.  My son's an EO.

I think you should contact an Ombudsman for his battalion....they are the liason for family members with the command....they may be able to help you get some info.

Can anyone offer any advice.  My son is on his first deployment in HOA since December.  He had an accident a couple of weeks ago and got pinned between a semi trailier and a cement barrier and broke his leg.  Since that time, he had his leg casted , but then they sent him to main body last week.  Since I spoke with him last Tuesday, I have not heard anything from him.  I know he's with main body.  When I asked questions and stuff when he got hurt, I got him in trouble, so I tried to wait, but I sent another message simply asking to have a status on his injury/care, etc. to the homeport liaison.  I know they sometimes can't call home, so I didn't ask for that, I just mentioned that I had heard from him or anyone since last Tuesday.  I got a rather kind of rude message back that said the he was there and they weren't in the habit of making service men call home, but he would get a message to his chain of command asking him to call home.  Still no word on how he is.  I just feel like I may have gotten him in trouble again, and I am just worried and concerned.  I also thought that's what those people were for...to help us out in just this kind of situation.  However, I feel like I'm getting no info at all.
I really am just worried and don't know what to do.  I don't want to get my son in trouble at all, but I really need to know how he is.
Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Denise, I am so excited for you to see Michael.  I hope you have a wonderful time!

Been very busy, so had lots of reading to do today.  My son is in 7 and I had heard the same information about the closings.  So I have done the mother thing "have you been studying, exercising, paying attention, volunteering....."  I think I have driven my son nuts.

Thank you all the for the information on what he shouldn't be doing.
