The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Jean C, don't know if you have Facebook, but the LCDR just posted a quick note on the Runnin' Roos page and assured us that everyone will be safe. By the time the typhoon hits the winds will have died down to 90mph(still crazy but not as bad as 160mph) and they are in their concrete buildings safe from the winds and flooding. They are expecting internet to be down during the storm, but said they would notify everyone how things are as soon as it comes back up. They go on lockdown starting at 1400 Saturday their time, so you may get to talk to your son a little before the storm hits! Hopefully this will ease your mind as it has mine :D

Yes, he is in 133. I think we have a day before the storm actually hits.....he said it should hit around 0100 Sunday their time. So that would be around 11am(central time) Saturday for us. I too am checking all the weather sites. I will check back here when I hear some news!

Yes Jean C. My husband has been exhausted the past few days. I just got a notice from the Ombudsman, though, that said they are only getting thunderstorms right now. They are expecting them to be just fine during the storm because it it supposed to weaken. I'm not so much worried about them as I am all the civilians that don't have all the protection our Bee's do. I should be getting a call in the next few hours with an update.....I just try to stay positive about all this.....I told my husband in the future to tell me AFTER the storm has hit so I don't stress about it before hand lol.

Ladies,

Please pray for my husband and the other people in Okinawa right now. They have a Category 5 typhoon headed their way. It is supposed to weaken to a 2 after it hits the cooler waters, but they will be on lockdown starting tomorrow. My husband was told that the storm is supposed to be worst than most hurricanes that have hit the states, but not as bad as Katrina. I suppose there is good news in that bad news after all. They are hoping that things won't be as bad as they are saying.....but we just have to wait. What will be, will be! Hope you are all doing well :D

So my middle son has been in Navy for 7+ years doing mechanical aviation, etc.  Loves it!  Stationed state side.  My youngest son just joined and is a Seebee.  New to the Seebee life.  Can you give us some pointers?

I hope they never get rid of the Seabee rate. It's too important.  My son spent a large chunk of his deployment to Guam drilling water wells in Cambodia.  What other part of the armed services would do that?  But right now he's facing either switching rates or getting out.

Unfortunately, Denise that is very true. I was blown away that the Seabee advancement was 0%. This is the site for the testing
http://www.navytimes.com/news/2011/05/navy-spring-petty-officer-adv...  if you click in the box that says spreadsheet you can see the number of people who passed and who advanced. Crazy that it's only the Seabee rates that didn't have any advancements, but overall the Navy advancement percentage went up. We shall see what happens within the next few years with Seabees. I think they could possibly be a dying rate. My husband said a lot of guys are either cross-rating or getting out completely because of this. If there is no opportunity for advancement why stay where they are? The other reason guys can't advance is because of all the complacent people taking up spots, so those of them that actually do want to rate up can't because of the ones who are stagnant. It seems like those in the Seabee position are less willing to advance and become more comfortable. Not sure why, but there are a lot of lazy bee's out there. Not saying they all are, but the ones who will be kicked out or leave after their contract seem to be the ones with complacency issues, obviously lol.

Kayla is coming up on year 1! lol

No she was saying BS too gossip. Someone is always saying something that they then say "nothing is for sure yet" which she was told later by her CO, this means it is gossip. He said to her that if it does not come from someone that actually knows something than never to believe it. I am guessing he meant someone of his stature (rank) and higher. That if a squad leader or PO says it to double check with him. lol sorry, was not meaning that this latest stuff is BS. She is aware of the things going on right now.

Robin- she was sort of being silly as I could not remember actually what is was called. She says I need a hand book. Where are you exactly at? She does pretty good at finding things out, she did say she met her Ombudsman and that she is really nice. I am not sure what info they exchange, or for that fact what info she is willing to give!! Most of her friends know how close the 2 of us are. Not that any of this will matter during deployment if they are not with her... lol

She is back at Camp Pendleton (SP? sorry) this weekend with another from the base. She has a good friend in the Marines stationed there.  They went to the "Puppy Store" this is always a bad thing for her, she found a Corgi that looks just like her Murphy here at home. Both friends would not allow her to play with it. They both know she would end up sad about not having her doggie.

So, I just have to find a way to get to her in the next few weeks and bring her pooch.

My son is still deciding whether to cross-rate or get out.  I just keep praying that he does what is best for him and his little family and has the wisdom and light to know what that is.
