OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

yes I was told the same of the 40 and 7. My understanding is they are not disbanding the Seabee's in this unit, they will go to a different battalion.

Kayla is in the 40. She said something about 2013 though. Yes after she goes on her (now not sure where) deployment. Any one else have anyone in either battalion?

Denise- Beautiful rose that you posted. My son PIR'ed on the 6th, what an awesome mothers day gift! He is currently at PH for A school...do you know how this "letting go of" 13,000 Seabee's might affect him? He is an E-2 CMA. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Denise,

What do you mean "let go". Why are they doing this? Just wondering.

Awww thank you Nita! Funny thing is, my husband didn't even know that yesterday was Military Spouse Appreciation Day....he felt bad he didn't get me anything. I told him it wasn't a big deal at all that it was just nice to know he loved me and missed me :D

MAnda20.. Happy Military  Spouse day and to all others  who are military spouses. bless you all.

@ emcmom.. my son was there  for his 3rd one. The unit he was  in  psoted updates on facebook. Perhaps  your son's commander  will do the same. , But  I agree with the others.. check with the group that MuchTrouble  gave you the link for. They are awesome. I found the group  after my son got back.

To emcmom...I agree with Susan!  This is a very helpful group, but when your kid is deployed to a war zone, try this group...

They walked me through everything and helped me keep my panic at bay.  (These people KNOW how you feel!!!)

Tobi-she is probably working on her SCWS pin....it's Seabee Combat Warriors. My hubby is working on getting his as well. They have a year from the time they get into the battalion to get it. My hubby wants his before deployment is over! She is a crazy girl going up to LA all the time. I hate that area lol. She will love the weather once summer hits....it's always perfect beach weather. There is nothing more beautiful than the beaches in Cali with the awesome Pacific Ocean.....I miss the waves and smell of the ocean. Yes, I am on the Gulf Of Mexico...but this is the MS Sound and let me tell you, there is no smell of ocean or waves to sound like it either. It's basically a giant lake! I definitely miss Kayla. All my friends either went to Cali or deployed with my hubby. I occupy my time with work now....and i still have a few friends that help me along too! If it weren't for skype I think I would cry.

I did realize the other day that I don't mind being alone though. I enjoy the quiet. I sit in the house with nothing on sometimes and just color.....yes, I'm a big kid at heart and bought coloring books to help pass the time lol. But it's so peaceful when it's quiet......not that my husband is extremely loud or anything but he does enjoy tv or music on almost all the time. I also bought Nutrisystem food. I know how to cook and I cook pretty healthy....the problem is, I'm used to cooking for a Navy and not for one....so i cook too much and it goes to waste....or i buy too much food and it goes bad before i can eat it. Nutrisystem will allow me to eat healthy and it's meals for one so now i don't have to worry about the food going bad. Not to mention, it's going to help me drop the weight I need to for the cruise we are going on next year. We are renewing our vows while on the cruise and I'm so excited I get to wear a wedding dress for the first time!! Anyway, sorry got to rambling.....I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

haha, I was gonna say the same... Sailors are those other men and woman of the Navy! lol  Seabee's well.... welcome and soon you will see. I get the the I am a dirt Sailor if you must add sailor to my name....

Kym, I was gonna ask you about your son. My kiddo is there and she knows a few folks now, most from A-school. However her (not sure what he is squad leader maybe) is getting them out and meeting people. She is doing her (I am gonna mess this up) sku???? lol

Any way, I get reports daily of how the weather sucks and she feels like she is in Ohio, just has an ocean there... lately she has been in LA. She and a girl from IT (they went to BC together) went on a tour bus, you would have thought Kay was gonna pass out and die, she had such silly FB status's... like someone just shoot me, why am I on this stupid bus.

She did send a pic of Keanu Reeves house for her daddy... long story but my husband really does not like him as an actor... lol

Kym,

We live just north of Tacoma. I've heard nothing but wonderful things about PH.
