OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Carol F: we will be praying for your son and you....it sure is a scary place over there
ronbri22: When Tyler left Afghan, they went to Kuwait for about 4 days, went to Shannon, Ireland then to Savannah, GA, and then to Gulfport. Flight from Kuwait to Gulfport was about 20 hours long.

Amen Robin. I know when my son gets home he will also be different. For the good or should I say better. I cant wait to see him. I have tears now just thinking about It. The really cool thing is this whole time hes been gone we have dinner with his girlfriend and have become very close with her parents. We have all been each others support. Go figure they met on a blind date 3 years ago. Turns out her dad is a chief and is a cm like my son. I think It was meant to be.

Joanie, if the pic is on your computer you can open Paint and either "erase" his name or scribble over it. (I would do it to a COPY of the pic. so you still have the real one intact.) Meanwhile, I hope that when you got done hugging him, you gave him extras from ALL his Seabee Moms!

Oh I am not the one wanting us to move, however she is also understanding of the way our state is in employment also. Her father has been offered jobs in about 8 different states, making more than he does now. She knows we only stayed her for family and for the kids. She wants for us to move. I have told her we may either be in the same state, but not close like the next city or maybe a state over. It is a choice that is not going to be made lightly as we do have other children. I am aware of deployments and so is she. She is just wanting to be able to see her younger sisters if time allows as we have explained this is something while on deployment will not and can not happen. That is why she says she wants us close for when she is home ported.

I agree with cancer the crab. We are San diego natives and he managed to get stationed here for the first 3 years and then off to port hueneme. Its still close to where he can come home on weekends if he wants. Thats nice but It gives him the space he needs to grow. Who knows where he may end up next. I hope not to far. lol
