RCU SHIP 04 DIV 741

Seamen Recruits are here getting medical treatment for minor injuries. FIT DIV is also in this area.

It's hard not knowing! That is the purpose for this group. Most likely if you are here your SR has had trouble keeping up or not passed a PFA due to some sort of minor medical issue. Often it stress fractures bringing SR's here. Know this when you don’t get a call that is a very good thing. Calling them is not a good thing and it can negatively impact your SR to have his or her “Mommy“ calling!  They are harder on them in this DIV than any other. They want them up and out. The best thing you can do is sends tons of mail. Send scripture and motivational mail. I know my SR said reading the Bible was considered a sign of weakness here. When you get a tearful call motivate. Stay positive and encourage you SR. This is a small detour to greatness and getting the I'm a Sailor call!  Recruit family and friends…“Navy mom friends are the best“…to send your SR mail as well.  NMH for you all!!

CTMom... Glad to hear they are keeping him. No, we do not think you are insane, just another Mom going through the same trials and pains as the rest of us did or are. All your questions are normal. You will not get all the answers you want from him when he calls because they are so limited and often someone is standing over them. I know on two occasions, ours called and I would ask questions and you could tell someone was directing his answers.  These were related to his calls after he had been to the doctor. They were not trying to be secretive or anything, it was just procedure I think.

Yes, there are phases. Phase 1 is recuperation. Phase 2 and 3 they begin physical therapy and start working with a division some and Phase 4 they are either working with a division or getting ready for Battle Stations if they are finishing in RCU. At least that is the progression ours went through.

Also, ours did not complain if his leg was hurting either. He just wanted to be done. It is very hard on them and they do sound so tired all the time. I think it is because they are not allowed to do anything for so long but sit. You can send them books, crossword puzzles and things like that, but they have to be approved I think. They could not have such things when ours there.

If he makes a good impression on the RDC's, sometimes they will let them call more often. One of the Chiefs took a liking to ours and let him have a longer phone call a couple of times, but as TwofortheNavy said, it is not the norm.

Just be as positive and encouraging as you can, because he will get depressed because of the disappointment to himself but to you as well. Lots of letters. I sent one every day. I tried to include anything that would make him laugh.

Keeping you in our prayers.

Hi CTMom, glad to hear they are keeping your son so far, my son went thru that too, with weekly checks to see how he was healing with always the possibility of being separated. My son did not fracture his main arm so he was able to write and keep up with the written tests of BC, other then that, he pretty much did nothing all day and was very bored, I do not know about sending magazines. I know at some point while in the RCU he was able to begin the physical aspects of getting thru BC but because chicken pox went thru the RCU and he caught them he did this stuff in isolation with the other "sick" kids and pretty much spent most of his time in the RCU, up until he passed "battle stations".
It's a very hard time for them and for us because we do not know what is going to happen, will they be separated, how are they doing emotionally, etc. I know while going thru the healing process if his arm hurt he did not mention it because he did not want to spend any more time at BC then necessary, he was there an additional 8 weeks from Jun 2012-Oct. 2012. The one positive about being in the RCU he was able to call weekly and from what I understand that is not the norm.
If you have any questions, or need to talk, I'm here. I'm not sure what other groups you are on so I added this group to my groups again.

Hi Everyone,

Paul called today. As of now, they are keeping him. They will look at him again in a week. They are saying that he has to stay there for 12 weeks and then go back through boot, however, they may at any time decide to send him home. Doesn't really make sense to me, but then again, none of this does!

Paul broke his right elbow and is right handed, so I'm not sure if he can even write. He told me he basically has to sit around all day, they aren't letting him do anything but rest. Are there different phases? He said he was really bored. Does anyone know if he's allowed to receive magazines or anything from us there? Does he have access to any type of entertainment at all? (tv, radio, computer, games) Twoforthenavy, thank you for your response, I was hoping I would hear from you since your son had a similar injury. Was it the arm he writes with also? Do you know if he had to recover for 12 weeks as well? Did he tell you how it was there? I have so many questions and never enough time to ask him everything!! :P

You all must think I'm insane! HA HA!

He sounded so tired...it made me worry. But, us mom's do that, right?

CTMom...Have you heard from the doctor visit?

Comment by TwoForTheNavy on January 15, 2013 at 11:49am
Hi CTMom, my son fractured his elbow shortly after arriving at BC in June of 2012. It was a bit of a waiting game at first they told him we will evaluate you in a week and let you know, this went on for a couple weeks. He was very nervous, discouraged at first. I'm not sure how bad the fracture was considered, but he was kept in the Navy and not separated. While recovering they allowed him to take the written tests required to somewhat keep him in the process of getting thru BC. Oh, and the chicken pox was going thru Ship 4 at this time, and he contracted that!!!
The Navy did keep him it just took him longer to graduate. He graduated in Oct. 2012 and is now at CT school in Pensacola.

Yes, I will let you know. Thank you for the prayers, they are greatly appreciated!

Let us know what the doctor says. We will be praying.

Thank you Susan....You are right, it's God's will at this point. We will find out on Tuesday after he sees the doctor for his one week follow up. :(

Comment by paces on January 13, 2013 at 8:50pm

CTMom....I thought it depended on the severity of the injury. I really am not sure. They don't let them do anything but sit until the injury begins to heal enough for them to safely get around. I know ours even had to have an escort to the restroom for about 3 weeks because the break was so bad. I am so sorry. I know this is difficult, but we will all pray for God's will. That is what you have to rely on right now. This is an awesome place to be though, because you have the prayers of all the Mom's.

He does need to portray the attitude that he really wants this to the RDC's there. If it looks like he doesn't care one way or the other, they will send him home. He needs to act like he really wants this, if that is what he wants.

We will keep him and you in our prayers. Hugs and Prayers, Susan

Does anyone in this group know if they give the recruits the option to stay or go or is it up to them whether he can stay or if he has to go?
