I decided to check back here since this group helped me immensely when my daughter was in ship 5.  Carolyn & Navy/Airforce Mom my thoughts and prayers are with you and your children and I wish them both a swift & safe journey home and much luck for their future.  My daughter was in ship 5 for about a week and a half and I know the uncertainty drove me crazy!  The only good thing was that she did make many great friends in ship 5 that she still keeps in contact with and they help each other in dealing with what happened to each of them.  I do know that if she knew beforehand what she knows now, she would not have ever enlisted.  Again good luck to you all!

My daughter was told this morning that she was going home on Monday. Then only to be told that she wasn't >_< now pending an xray on Wednesday. Whether she will stay another 2 weeks. They are not taking care of her, why don't they just send her home so we can get her physical therapy and on the right meds. I hope to god that she doesn't end up being crippled by this. I know mentally she being strained by the mind f**king that is going on.

Thanks Lauren :) I just got a phone call from my daughter, she does have Ostiopenia. They are keeping her ther until she is fit for travel. I don't understand how she could have this bone disorder without out us knowing before this. My daughter is a black belt in karate, ran hurdles and played volleyball with no broken bones. Does anyone know about benefits like medical? can she apply for unemployment? She can't walk very well at all.

Just got back from Great lakes, I was allowed 3 hours time with my daughter at the NEX. It was so hard to see her that way, my daughter left me strong and healthy and ready to take on basic training. I sat there with my daughter who could barely walk due to 13 stress fractures in her knees, ankles and heel. She has been sent to SEPS and was diagnosed with Ostiopenia. We are fighting this diagnosis and will find out the results of the scan tomorrow. They are not giving her physical therapy and I feel that if she doesn't get help soon she may be crippled. My daughter still wants to be in the Navy. It's scary some of the stories I have heard about ship 5. If she doesn't get what she needs physically I am writing my congressman.

Hi, I'm Arwen. My son was recently released from the Navy, after about 18 months of service. He got into a fight (lost patience with a bully who had been harassing him), then missed a couple of musters - three strikes and you're out, he said.

 

His situation is different from those discharged from boot camp, but there are a lot of similarities. I've started a group,"Kicked out: the pain and process", for those whose sailors are being discharged later in their careers, for whatever reason.

 

So now I have him at home (he arrived home late Friday night), and is frustrated and confused as to how to move ahead. He can't go to school, because his earnings combined with ours over the last 18 months make him ineligible for student grants until at least the 2013-14 school year, and there are NO jobs available for him. Even McDonald's isn't hiring.

 

He's fortunate, he got a general under honorable conditions discharge, it could have been much worse.  But he's feeling like he let the whole family down (the family tradition of Navy service).

I check back here too because I remember all the pain and apprehension when we were going through it.  I wish they would do something so that nobody else's kids would have to go through this.  It really hurts to see that it is still happening.  They encourage them and then let them down so hard.

I know my son is also apprehensive for the same reason. I really don't think he will try again for that very reason. I have also been searching on the internet and obtaining a waiver after having cataract surgery is next to impossible.....so I guess he will just have to move on and find a new dream. It really is very sad and frustrating to hear from others that it happened for a reason, but I guess that's the reality of it. Good luck to you and your son! Please feel free to contact me if you need to chat. I seem to always check this site even though my son is now home. I guess it just makes me feel better.

My son is afraid of going back to Ship 5 so I don't think he will ever try to go back in.  His plans were dashed and he has no idea what to do next.  It is hard.

I can imagine how he feels. My son didn't say alot of bad things about ship 5 but didn't want to be there any longer......he really wants to re-enlist but only if a waiver would guarantee he wouldn't be sent home again. I would really like to know what the chances are. He said there were people on ship 5 that had waivers and were still sent home. I really am beginning to believe that it is a no win situation if your sent home.
