MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

I did forget to add....my son was a division leader, flag bearer and doing very well. He liked what he was doing and all of his letters were very upbeat and positive until he got hit with this "cold" he had been battling. Sorry, I felt I needed to add this as he was doing great and anxious to get on with his A schooling.

Hi everyone....I am new to this particular group. My son was in Ship 10 / Div 333 and was supposed to graduate on this coming Friday. He was moved to Ship 5 on this past Friday with pneumonia/bronchitis/double ear infections and throat infections running a 104 fever. He was totally out of it when he called to tell me he was pulled. Then he told me the devasting news that he was being sent home. At first I was totally surprised. Then I found out it was due to headaches. He never had them before.

Needless to say the weekend was awful and I finally heard from him last night. They had him in the hospital and finally started giving him antibiotics. He also told me that he was basically coming home due to these so-called headaches. I am sick over this and have no one to turn to.

I pulled myself off his PIR group as it was too painful.

When we spoke last night he seemed much better and ready to come home. He said he was fine with this decision. I still don't understand it. He said they are "disqualifying him not discharging" him but he said he does not want to try and go back.

Well I am awaiting to find out when he will be coming home and just wanted to vent. Thank you all for listening. I hope for whatever reasons your son/daughter is on Ship 5 they will succeed in life! I am praying for all of them.

Becky - thanks for posting. I wish Jake success until he solves his eye problems and can re-enlist.

Here is an update on Mollie.
She took a couple of weeks off when returning from GL. She was given her sister's job at an insurance agency (it's her Uncle's agency), while her sister is student teaching. She is enrolled at a community college, but it was too late to begin classes. She will keep working and begin to take night/online classes in January. She had to have her appendix out last week, I was so glad she was home. It upset her to have to come home after just a few days, it would have been extremely hard to be delayed or not graduate within a few days/weeks of graduation.

iowanavygf - I only know that Ship 5 is separations. I don't know about 4 or 6. My son just came home last week, but is eligible to immediately re-enlist. Hopefully your bf will be able to recover and stay. It's tough not being able to help right there and have to hear alot just over the phone. Good luck. Rose R seems to be knowledgeable on this page and helped me tremendously along with moral support. BTW to Rose R, that is also my daughter's name, I don't think I ever mentioned it. Hope things are going well for you. :)

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the difference between the injured ships.. ive read through comments on here as well as ship 6. My bf was moved from ship 7 to ship 4 last week for blowing out his shoulder.. they told him it was an 80% chance of him going home. Does anyone know whats different from ship 4 versus 5 or 6? Any insight would be appreciated!
Comment by ranaeaw (ship 03 div 316) on September 7, 2010 at 3:45pm
Well, I've heard from him twice today. He said he is in Ship 5. He also is waiting for his medical records from here at home to be faxed up there to GL. He said he signed a request to release form for info today. I hope they get it soon.
I don't know what happened, but I have contacted a friend who has recently retired from Navy and he's helping me look into it. Upon his suggestion, he thought my son maybe hadn't mentioned to MEPS about his cardiac problem (which all came back negative) a year ago. So the second time I heard from my son, I asked him if he had told MEPS and he said yes, that they had specifically asked him that question and he told them about having tests and that they'd come back all okay. That he was basically stressed and nervous and that caused increase heart pulse. Anyway, his recruiter knew and so did MEPS and now that information has been lost somehow and he's being discharged or released based upon fraudelant enlistment?? He's been very open about it, so I don't understand....
Comment by ranaeaw (ship 03 div 316) on September 5, 2010 at 8:42am
Well, he called me again last night- it's so good that I hear his voice. The first time he called I couldn't make hardly heads or tails of what he was saying (I think because he was so upset)and after we hung up after the initial phone call I figured out a part of what he was saying was that he didn't get a medical waiver signed after some cardiac appointments last fall during football season. So last night he called and sounded so much better, he said he needs the waiver signed by the civilian doctor and he also has an ppointment with the cardiologist in a couple of days. Then he said his graduation might get pushed back a couple few weeks. So I think once he was calmer and asked a few questions he found out a little more information. I still think the TB was a false positive because he didn't even mention that again and maybe they put him and the 6 others in Ship 5 to keep them separate so others wouldn't catch it, which I can understand. This is all just so new and confusing because we can't be there with him and help him talk to the right people, but I guess that's all a part of growing up. :) Now hopefully the next time he calls I'll be sure to mention a few things to help him talk to the right people. I want to thank you all for being supportive, don't know what I would have done without this website and the circle of new on-line friends. :)
