A significant number (less than half, though) of sub volunteers end up on surface craft, Lynda. That said, being 6'5" on a sub wouldn't be a big inconvenience, particularly if he were to wind up on a Trident boat. In the engine room especially, there is lots of head room, walking around (and not just on Tridents). I've seen a lot of comments about the racks (bunks), and I'll mention that sailor's racks on surface ships and submarines are the same size (length and width), though the headroom (height) on some of the racks aboard submarines is less, because some have some piping above the rack. I suppose guys that tall just get used to sleeping on their sides with their knees bent, the same as the rest of us often do.

It probably has to do with the amount of room available, Anita. There are only two watches for ET Nukes to stand. AJ would be starting from square one in his watchstation qualifications, both because he hasn't been to sea yet (underway watches are different from inport) and the Seawolf and Jeff City are different classes of ship, with many differences. It's almost certain that the Jeff City already has the six ET Nukes it takes to fully man the watch bill, so taking on another non-qual would do nothing to help the watch bill and would more than likely result in one or two crew members hot-racking that aren't already doing so. The flip-flopping part sux, for sure - but submarine crews are quite small and having an additional body on board, when they're fully manned, impacts a number of people.

Did you know that September is Ombudsman Appreciation month. Take the time to tell them thank you for being your link into your sailor's service and lives!

For those of you who want to keep Meg's article - I would recommend doing what Wendy did and copy it into your documents. That is how I was able to post it. I'm very glad that I was able to share it. Relationships are tough especially when you have a 'silent type' of sailor and an equally 'silent' dil. Hange in there we all have different opportunities and we are able to support eachother. Blessings and success to each of you in all your relationships~Susan

Lisa , You might also suggest having them copied so she can still have a copy of them and you can frame the originals. Have them professionally copied and maybe frame them all for her as a Christmas gift.

Lisa, if I had a DIL who wanted to do that, I'd pay for for the framing. Both son 21 & 25 single.

Well, here is the latest we can't find Meg. I have asked Regina for resources. I am so sorry that the article has evaporated. It was awesome - talked about boundries and communication. Please keep Meg and her family in your prayers for what ever they need at this time. She was serving as an ombudsman and was accomplishing truly awesome support for all of us. A lot of what is shared is important because a lot of us don't get the chances - i.e. to be there when they come home, etc. This site is very importatn for all of that. Thank you for being open. ~Susan
