Terrie, have you been contacted by the Ombudsmen yet? There are 2 for the ALABAMA. If not, leave a post on my page and I'll put you in touch. Although we can't greet them as they come off the boat, the families meet in a park to watch the boat come into the harbor, then gather where they've parked their cars. Jena' and Trish can give you all the details. Hugs, k.

Hi Terrie,
I was on fast attack submarines in San Diego, and am also familiar with the Bangor base, since my job takes me onto the boats there occasionally. I am not familiar with Kings Bay in Georgia, but unlike Bangor, the bases for fast attack submarines are not controlled as tightly (security-wise) on the waterfront areas. Being familiar with the mission of SSBNs, you can appreciate that they have different weapons systems on board - I guess the reason for the difference lies there. It's really a shame for you and the families of other boomer sailors. I see that you are in Georgia - do you happen to know whether the setup there is similar to Bangor - that is that the waterfront area is inaccessible to families?

Wow, I've missed a lot. I'll have to make time to catch up. I just wanted to drop a note of THANKS to all of you! The four hours tress test went well for my husband (Dan). We will know the results of the pictures of his heart in a few days. My angel blessings to each of you~s

Good for him for pursuing STA-21! Five years is a long sea tour - it used to be that you could go to shore duty after a three year tour if you re-enlisted. Of course, STA-21 would get him off the boat as well. In a couple more years, he will also have LDO (Limited Duty Officer) open to him. LDO offers a commission without requiring a college degree. LDOs cannot ever have command of a boat though, and spend their career in senior supervisory duties aboard a tender or on shore duty - many of them (the nucs, anyway) also get a spot with Naval Reactors, providing oversight of the Nuclear Navy.

Hi Paula,
I think you have pretty much have it nailed. Donovan must be a "hot runner" to have been picked up for staff at NPTU - what is he shooting for after his current sea tour?

Re-enlistment bonuses have never been about rewarding people for staying in the military. That is why they are officially called Selective Re-enlistment Bonuses (SRB). They are there simply to adjust the "market" for service-members with experience and specific skills, in order to retain the minimum number needed for the military to carry out it's mission. The military has a budget and a mission, and has to be smart about where the money goes. I know it's fashionable these days, with people like Jon Stewart and Keith Olbermann being so popular (and misleading), to rail on about "Wall Street bailouts" etc., and unquestionably a lot of money is being wasted. I don't think many people understand that most of the money used in the bailout of banks and the auto companies to date is not given to them, but loaned to them. The federal government is also getting a piece of the company in many cases, that will increase in value when we pull out of the recession, and then be sold back, resulting in a profit to the Treasury. Where the government is not getting a piece of the company(s), the money is in the form of a loan, that will be paid back (to the Treasury) at a relatively high interest rate. We are in a very serious situation, and spending has to be smart, and the financial system cannot be allowed to fail, or we will be back to the 1930s. The compensation package for service-members is vastly improved over what it was in the recent past, and most of their medical and housing IS paid for by the government.

I would respectfully suggest that now is the time to contact Congressmen, Senators, and the President's office. We are, after all, the only ones who can speak out for our sons and daughters. As active duty, they can't lobby for themselves. It might be a good idea for some Moms to contact news outlets. Fox News has always been very pro-military. These actions often can not stand the light shown on them by the national news. My sons are in a fortunate position in that they are either Nukes or Computer specialists (CTN). But I'm still outraged by this news and think it should be shared with as many N4M's groups as we can. My husband was in the Navy years ago and I watched this type of thing happen and no one spoke up for us. I personally drove wives to apply for welfare and food stamps back then.

Thank you everyone. I've been watching and praying also. This is just awful news. Our families have SO much that they are constantly working though daily; and to actively not support them is beyond conception. This has made my heart sad, and is a very difficult stand that our country is taking. I too must admit that while I have always been very patriotic and feel very blessed to be an American - I am very sad at the state of affairs we are currently living through.
I am so very greatful to have this site, and all of you. We are each supporting our families in every way possible. I do agree that we also need to use our voice not only in prayer but in action! My blessings to each of you~s

Good Morning:
Well, the doc said that the spot on Dan's lung had not changed in two years - so no worries; and he is good with that. Thank you for your prayers. Monday he has the four hour test in Sacramento. Then maybe things will settle back down. Thank you all! My angel blessings~s

Hi Everybody: Please keep praying for our little Brianna. We received a message that she is home the surgery was five hours long. Please keep praying for successful healing and their family. Thank you~s
P.S. We didn't get the message till last night - but we have had the Navy training in 'wait and hear' as well as 'trust and obey' (that is a hymn by the way)! Funny things you learn while waiting for news. Thank you for asking, that warms my heart especially when the doubt starts to creep in!
