WearsLargeHats so happy to hear that your wife is better. I agree, try contacting the ombudsman. If your son is still a Nub(has not earned his dolphins) his computer time might be more limited. It’s worth a shot!

So Thankful your wife is on to recovery.  Will continue to keep her and your family in prayer.

To WearsLargeHats, I'm glad that your wife is on the road to recovery. Have you considered contacting the ombudsman to see if there is a way for her to get a message to your son to let him know about his mom?  It's hard to have to wait for e-mails. My son has been in

sub service for almost 20 years and the ombudsman was able to get an important message to him,

I guess I should post an update on the cancer thing. We talked to our son when he got into port. Then, right after we got home after meeting with the surgeon to schedule the surgery, our son called to tell us he was leaving on deployment.

My wife had her surgery a couple weeks ago. Everything went fine. All the tests came back good, so we caught it early. Radiation is contraindicated, and chemo would likely do more harm than good, so she isn't doing that.

I sent our sailor a couple of emails, but haven't heard back. We sure would like to, but they call it the Silent Service for a reason, and it is amazing that email is even possible.

So proud of our son, Garrett who will be graduating from "A" school in Groton, Conn. this Friday as a Machinest Mate on a Los Angeles Class Submarine, (SSN 765) with the highest GPA score in his class, allowing him to graduate as an E3 In the U.S. Navy! Way to go Garrett! Congratulations!

Thanks, Kaye, that is very helpful.

My DIL is ombudsman for the sub. It's important to tell your son about the situation before he leaves, so he can put it on his pre-deployment sheet. Without that, the command will not tell him if you reach out during the cruise. He needs to let them know he's aware of the situation, so if something develops he'll be told about it.

WearsLargeHats, I agree with all the other responses, that it would be best to tell your son upfront what is happening. The good news right now, is the prognosis is positive, which is what you should focus on when you tell your son. You don't want it to be a shock to him, if he is not told ahead of time & something should, God forbid, go wrong. Even though he is away & not living at home, he is still part of the family & needs to feel involved & informed in whatever is going on, as a member of the family. You are all in my thoughts & prayers.
