To email your son on the boat: last name, first name initial, middle name initial, @name of boat. Navy.mil. When they are deployed they can receive messages but sometimes cannot respond. Please send all your emails in plain text, with no attachments.

As always Mark, thanks for your input!

You're very welcome marybeth.  Best of luck to your daughter (and you); may I ask what program she's signed up for (i.e. job)?  I think she's likely to have a good experience, though it will be a mixed bag in the short term.  There will be an advantage to being in the submarine community from the beginning.  The transition from the surface Navy to submarines can be even more challenging because bad habits are often formed that are really exposed when the work environment abruptly changes from a very large group to a group half the size with the same workload.  If a person doesn't carry their load in those cases, they stand out like a sore thumb.  That environment produces a unique type of sailor and individual in later life.  Past time for me to jump off the soap box now :)

I'm not posting as much as I used to, but I do read my emails and enjoy hearing about all the accomplishments. Much love to you all!!

My son's boat actually has a page on here. I joined that, posted here and instantly started making connections. So, keep at it, moms!!

Yes, ombudsmen serve a delicate balance between the morale of our sailors and the needs of us moms who just want to KNOW. In my case, the other moms have been so helpful. I did reassure my son that being able to ask the ombudsman questions meant he'd have to answer fewer... Lol

It is hard to let them go, but try to focus on how great it is to watch them soar and accomplish their dreams.

My guy is in the dog days of his first deployment and I think we've both learned a lot. Just know that you moms are the sounding board for your sailor. They count on us to keep things ok at home -- that means with ourselves too!!

Just want to make a little clearer that I encourage everyone here to work with their sons (soon daughters, as well) to get on the ombudsman's list. Just wanted to help in understanding a little more on what can sometimes be a complex issue.

There is a FB sight "Loved Ones of Hawaii Submarines" It is a closed group so you have to ask to join. I found two moms on there with sailors on my son's boat.

Deployment you only send like a gallon zip lock bag for Halfway care package (just once)

Obundman is for mom's too. You can find her, Someone just sent me the info on looking that up.

My son on his first underway sent me his email once he was assigned one. I can email him anytime and he just once in a while.

I agree, Mark. I haven't been here in a while but I gather someone is not being put on the Omb list for their Sailors boat. There is absolutely a reason that not everyone can get on that list. being on that list is a privilege, granted by your Sailor, w a "no drama", clause in invisible ink...;) I have been on my oldest's Omb, and now his wife is and she is super about filling me in w regards to halfway boxes and boat activities. My youngest squid is out of Guam and I have NEVER missed a mail drop because the first thing he does, is get my name on that list...because he wants to, not as a result of me asking him to.

Wise words Mark. Thanks for your experienced information.

I perhaps should rephrase my thoughts about sailors being misinformed about ombudsmen. I coild be wrong, but some of them may think it tags them asa mama's boy or ssomething. Or in my son's case, some are top-notch procrastinators. But it really is in his interest that a parent be on the contact list, often the ombudsman is the only communication from the boat. I contacted my son's ombudsman myself, got on the list. I was lucky as our boat ombudsman has a fb page. I gave her our son's name and rate and once she verified he was part of the crew, I was on the list. My hubby is also on the list.

The boat's policy would definitely be to allow parents on the ombudsman's list, but the command also very much respects the sailor's prerogative to control communications (for very good reasons in some circumstances).  So, it is up to the sailor to decide what is appropriate in his mind, and many do consider it for wives and GFs.  Just my 2 cents from one who has been there - please know that I get where you are coming from :)
