Nice info PeachyMom. Once my sailor finally gets to Japan (now it looks like January) I know he will love it. This will be his first trip overseas and he is really looking forward to it. Of course right now he is stuck at his A school location until someone comes back with a pen ;-)

Hi Mama C and TexasBird. My sailor has been on with the blue ridge for almost 2 years. He is coming home this christmas he did not get to last year, but I sent gifts and we skyped and we made it through. He did come for about a week this spring and now we are blessed he is coming home for christmas. What I want to say is if they don't make it home that first Christmas, keep the faith and perhaps next one.

He loves being aboard, both underway and at base. In fact texasbird he has  roommate from texas. My son and I skype typically once a week, or two weeks depending on his assigned duty. While underway it depends on the country they are at port with on whether they are able to contact as much. I think the longest we were out of contact was just over a month. All in all they could not be aboard a better ship.

Hope you ladies have a blessed holiday.

Mama_C that would have been fun to be at the pinning ceremony! I am waiting for my sailor to come home before shipping out to Yokosuka. Not sure he's gonna make it for Christmas

just got a text the ceremony is going on now, sure wish I was there.  My son was 24 when he went to boot camp.  He is known as the old man.    His higher ups want him to give him more responsibility but couldn't because of his rank.  He found out while on leave he so excited he couldn't wait to get back.  He wants make Navy his career.

Hello TXBird Robin, my son has been on Blue Ridge for a year and just return from his Thanksgiving leave with my daughter and myself at home.   He loves this ship and your son may see my son because he is a CS, (cook). Recently promoted to 3rd Petty Officer.  Presently my son is living in a dorm room, however when he first arrived he was living in a barge which he said is undescribable wishes no one stay there.  It can a temporarily situation until they go aweigh next spring then they will in the ship racks.  I know there can be wait for dorm room.    My son likes the CO.  Upon returning to base he participated in Yokosuka CHOPPED.  He made it through Appetizer and Entree rounds.  He's looking forward to do again next year.

Hello and good morning to all of you. My son, recently graduated YN A school and has been assigned to the USS Blue Ridge, arriving at the end of this month. He will live on base and work on the ship. He is my youngest (21) and so excited to be starting his new life, especially in Japan which was his "hope". Anyone else have this living arrangement?

Hi everyone my daughter was on this ship a few years ago. It's a great ship your sailors will get to travel to lots of countries since it's the Flagship they pretty much get to go where they want to!! My daughter saw so much while on this ship, she was there when the tsunami hit. This site was very helpful during that time I found out they were safe and sound through this page and the ships Facebook page so make sure you sign up for that too if you haven't already, I always new where they were from there FB page LOL. They keep that page updated.

My son has been assigned to the USS Blue Ridge.  Don't know when he will head out yet.  Thankful he will get leave to visit before!  He is 18 and so very very excited.
