hi millye. i email with my sailor almost everyday and just talked to him on the phone yesterday (which was very exciting!) is there a specific question you have? i know that it's against security to talk about schedules and such... which stinks, i know. :(

Oops, I almost forgot. Kelcie said that indeed, they CAN travel stateside while in uniform, but it has to be their "seasonal dress" uniform. No cammies etc. And NO, they cannot be in uniform on international flights. So that's the "skinny" on that subject :>)

Moma Nonie, you are so right, it's all in what the kids make out of where they are stationed. Kelcie's last base was El Centro, Ca. Most of the kids called it Hell Centro, but she loves dirt bikes etc and she made the most of it any enjoyed her time there. It was a VERY small base, so Yokosuka was a culture shock for her when she 1st got there. But she adapts quickly, which is definitely to her benefit.

DC,
I am a Army Brat. My father did 20 yrs Special Forces. Grandfather (mom's side)did a few years back in WWII. My dads' dad worked and retired from the VA up at Great Lakes. My husband is Retired Navy and I have 2 sons in the Navy. And my whole life my dad has instilled in me and my siblings ONCE MILITARY ALWAYS MILITARY. He instilled that since of pride. Even tho he was treated like crap when he came back from Vietnam.
I was at a Verizon store and was talking with a gentleman and he was talking about his son in Irag that is a contractor. He made the statement that he himself was EX Air Force. Of course I had to correct him. I asked him some questions: You served your country, Correct? Then your not EX Air Force.

Momof2, I know that the Marines instill the idea that once a Marine, always a Marine. I come from a military family and none refer to themselves as EX, even those who did not stay in long enough to retire.

Mary, I agree, our Sailors are getting an opportunity to have wonderful experiences. I like it when they take advantage of it.

Ginnlynn, Having lived in Norman, OK, which is just south of Oklahoma City, I can assure you that your son will have a bit of culture shock when he arrives.

Navy Ma,
What I was talking about is when someone says they are EX Navy, EX Army, etc.. Just because they are no longer in the Military service does not mean they are EX. Now it is a different story when it comes to ex-husbands and ex-wives. Trust me I have 2 ex-husbands and there are reasons they are ex's. But when it comes to Military Service it is a whole different ball game.

MaryJo,
Please don't take offense to what I am going to say. Just a slight correction. No such thing as a EX Navy Man. Once Military Always Military. I am from a Military family. And you never loose that feeling of pride. They may be retired or seperated but never ex.

Sherrill, that makes total sense. Anyone in uniform would be an easy target, that's for sure.
Comment by Mollie...Kelcies Mom on July 14, 2010 at 12:26am
MaryJo....I'll have to ask her. I know that she said that when she 1st went in. Maybe you have to be a certain rank before you are allowed to????
Bobdot, if you are part of the ships crew, I think you have to be either an E3 or E4 before you get a room on base when you are in port. I know that Kelcie was REALLY glad she was an E4 so she didn't have to live on board during extended stays in Yokosuka. I feel for your daughter, it's a long enough trip without experiencing delays!!
Comment by Mollie...Kelcies Mom on July 13, 2010 at 10:21am
DC and bobdot, yeah, if you are with the airwing, the set up is different. I know that being part of the "crew", they had to clear out their rooms in Yokosuka before they departed. I know Kelcie did store some things that she didn't want to take on board due to either space, or the stealing issue.
