Bobdot, our granddaughter is with the airwing so when the GW is in port, she is housed at Atsugi. Before the GW left, she was provided instructions about securing personal effects while she is gone. I would imagine that the boat crew would get something similar.

bobdot, she may well have her hands full!! They either catch a train or military bus from Narita to Yokosuka. I think Kelcie took on suitcase, plus her "seabag", and I remember her saying it was a lot to handle. But I'm pretty sure that there are usually quite a few sailors arriving at the same time, and they help each other out. She will manage, but they have very limited space while aboard the carrier. She might have to store some items on base before she gets aboard.

As far as I know, Navy is the only branch that isn't allowed to travel on commercial flights in uniform. It's good that their passport tips some of the airline staff off to the fact that they are military. My nephew is Air Force and when he was flying back from Iraq, on the leg from Amsterdam to NYC, a passenger in 1st class saw him in coach and INSISTED that he take his seat in 1st class. That was SO awesome.
Kathy16....that's great to know that you can go with your sailor beyond security and spend the wait time with them at the gate. I will definitely keep that in mind.
Am I wrong about them not being able to wear their uniform on commercial flights? Kelcie was told this right after boot camp, and has always complied.

I will tell you what we know about the upgrades for Military. Some of the airlines if they guys or gals are in uniform they will upgrade automatically if there is a seat available.

It cost Kelcie (and us) about 900.00 (round trip) to come home at the end of March. That was to Sacramento Ca. I'm sure it is MUCH more around the holidays. I have a feeling we are going to find out, as she REALLY is hoping for leave at Christmas also. Hasn't been home for the last 3 since she enlisted.
Millye...thanks for the info about Travel Guard, although it usually costs about 150.00 to change the dates on your ticket, and you have a year before the ticket expires, so you gotta weigh the cost of each. How much did the Travel Guard run?
Comment by abc815 on July 11, 2010 at 11:38pm
i know that if you can somehow book your ticket soon, the fares are as low as $700-800 roundtrip!

hey ladies. i am signed up with the frg ( i am stateside). however, i don't find them TOO helpful. they seem to be geared mostly for the families in japan, you know...having get-togethers and support groups, etc. the one thing i like is that they send out mass emails to let you know when the gw will be coming into port, but they won't tell you anything until about 24 hours prior to them pulling in. i am sure like many of you, i am always waiting to find out the ship's schedule so i can plan a visit out there, but of course, it's against security guidelines...does anyone else know of other sites where i can find out more up-to-date information? or is it always going to be this waiting game? (i am very new to the navy lifestyle)... thanks ladies!

Hi all, FRG stands for "Family Readiness Group" they are the primary support group for the family of the sailors. They primarily act as support for families that are actually over in Japan with their husbands. I didn't know until Millye's post that they were available to help us "stateside" families when we visited. That WOULD be a lot of fun, if a whole group of us could go for a visit at the same time!

Millye, Your trip sounds wonderful. Thanks for posting your experience. I think it helps those of us who are dreaming of joining our sailors in Japan for a brief time to read about the experiences of others.

Lisa, great advice about getting a passport. I had another N4M member tell me that when she travels in the US she carries it just in case of an emergency. She also takes a backpack with emergency clothes.

Boy if all of us who are "planning" a trip next spring go at the same time, we could have a grand party!

Millye...I did know about the "Tuesday AM posting of new prices" Hawaii would be great over spring break. I grew up on Kauai, and my brother and his family still live there. We just took the girls there last summer. It is super expensive, so if you can get a condo, and do some "eating in" it really helps keep the price down.
