Millye.....thanks SO much for all of the info. We are hoping to go over next spring before they leave for the 2011 cruise, but it would be great if we could time it so that we can see them leave port. It sounds amazing. It sounds like the FRG was a big help. I would have never thought of contacting them.

Masue, from what I understand, their military passport will be enough to get them off of the carrier when they are in port, but it doesn't allow them the freedom that a traditional passport does. If there is any way for him to get an application going for a traditional passport, it is recommended that they have that also. I would think that there would be somebody aboard that could help with that. Kelcie had applied for hers before she left the States, but it didn't arrive until after she left for Japan, so I had to mail it to her.

Masue,
He should have a Military passport if not I am sure they will help him get one.

DG....that's TOOOO funny. Tmoulas....Kelcie just got there in late October. Her dad was Air Force also, as was her uncle. But her heart was always with the Navy for some reason. We haven't gone to see her yet. Have kind of starting thinking about a visit late next spring, just before they start the 2011 deployment. They "Yokosuka Moms" group tends to have a lot of travel info exchanged on it. I figure I'll be checking that group out a lot more come this winter, when we get a little more serious about planning a trip.

tmoulas: Didn't your daughter know the saying:

"Join the Navy to see the world. She joined the Navy and what did she see? She saw the sea!"

tmoulas, how long has your daughter been in Japan? I also encourage Kelcie to see and do EVERYTHING she possibly can. This is really a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I tell her "you don't want to leave thinking....gee, I wish I had done this or that while I was there" This is her first season at sea and I know she is looking forward to hitting lots of new ports. Hopefully that will happen at some point :>)

Hi Mary, my daughter had a sponsor, but like Claudia's son, she arrived while the ship was out. No one met her, but she managed to find either the USO or the DoD. They directed her to the bus that she needed to catch and she did fine. She was exhausted after the 13 hr flight, plus about 3 more hours on the bus. Kelcie says that everyone in Japan is eager to help, and especially if they speak english, they like to use every opportunity to practice. She has traveled via the bullet train several times and has never had any problems. It is scary, sending your youngsters out into the world, but it is amazing how much growing they still have to do. You are right, this site is WONDERFUL. Only wish I had known about it earlier in my daughters career.

Oh my gosh tmoulas.....that's awful!! She has GOT to be hurting. Glad she is feeling "up" emotionally. Somehow "signifigant others" tend to really help at their age :>)

It is my understanding that the Sailors are to send a email to the ship while they are stateside. I would send a email to the Ombudsman for the ship and inquire as to whether he needs a sponsor or not.
