Mary, our granddaughter did have a sponsor and he met her at the airport. Maybe they are more protective of the female sailors, who knows. Anyway as others have told you, I bet your son will do fine, especially since he is the adventurous type. I am also sure the USO will make sure he is pointed in the right direction. Remember our imaginations can really run wild because we aren't there and because we have more experience.

tmoulas, I am so thankful that your daughter was not more seriously injured. The manning of the rails looks great but I must say it has concerned me some. Now it will concern me even more. Of course, I always find things to worry about. I'm going to tell my g'daughter to make sure she is near a catwalk! I'll take a broken wrist and damaged nose any day over other possibilities.

tmoulas.....your comment was the 1st I've heard. Is she okay?

Carolina...yep, DC spelled out the facebook access very well. It is really a great thing, what with the pictures and Sailor of the Day posts. When they are out to sea, it really feels like a lifeline.
DC..how cool that you actually got to see your granddaughter in one of the pictures!! This is our second time dealing with Stanford, and I have been impressed both times with their professionalism and caring staff, from MD's, to nurses, CNA's, transportation, admitting.....you name it :>) It just makes whatever illness you are going thru so much easier when you feel like they truly care about you.

Carolina, first of all you need to join FB. Once you are a member, type in George Washington into the search box. You will see a link to the GW page. You have to "Like" it in order to post but I think you can see everything without "Liking" it. On there, you will see tabs for the Wall, Photos, Notes, etc.

On the Wall, the powers that be post announcements, e.g., "we just pulled into Yokosuka." Family members also post.

Under Notes, you will find the "Sailor of the Day" along with a picture. I like this section a lot because so many sailors deserve an "atta boy" every now and then. When you think that this is out of a crew of over 5000 it is an impressive honor.

Under Photos, you will find the pictures of the day. They are of day-to-day operations, many things that do not provide a security risk. One evening, my g'daughter's picture was up there. It so made my day.

There is also a site for GW Ombudsman. There you have to be accepted as a member. When I requested to be allowed on the list, I provided information about me and my Sailor. It was no problem. You can also request information from the Ombudsman's e-mail list. Just remember that you may get slightly advanced information because you are a family member but it is privileged. You need to resist the urge to tell others.

Mollie, it is great when you get into a medical center where the doctors are so competent and not arrogant. I was amazed when my oncologist at Dana Farber in Boston actually gave me his e-mail address. In addition, he responds if I ask a question. My cardiologist at Brigham and Women's also gave me her e-mail address.

Sherrill, BZ to your son on his promotion! Given then low number that advanced, that is and accomplishment!

Thanks Lisa, yep, Stanford is WONDERFUL. And everyone is so nice. I have never experienced any arogance on the part of their docs, which has actually kind of surprised me, having worked in the medical field for almost 30 years.
Sherrill.........CONGRATS on your sailors promotion. Quite an accomplishment, as it is getting tougher and tougher to advance :>)

Such a WONDERFUL 4th wasn't it ladies!! We were gone to Stanford Medical Center, as my hubby had surgery there on friday. Had been wanting to wait till Kelcie got to port SOMEWHERE, so we could tell her what was going on, and did not want to do it via e-mail. Got a ship to shore call from her on Wednesday, so was able to tell her. It was wonderful that they got back into port and she was able to talk to her dad shortly after surgery so she could KNOW that he was doing okay.

I read the comments and have to laugh. Early this morning the phone rang and DH wanted to know who would call at that hour. I laughed and told him it was our granddaughter. Later he asked how I knew. As SANDRA says "mama [grandmother] knows everything." I went to bed happy knowing that in a couple hours they would be docking. Like Ginny, it is good to have the granddaughter off the flight deck. Now I look forward to her getting back to Atsugi so we can Skype each other.

OOPS Mollie your right. I posted incorrectly and I sent to wrong zip. S/B 96650-2801. Maybe that is why it is taking alittle longer for my son to get his box. I better email the lady that makes the rack packs and give her the correct zip.
