Thomas' Mom, I know this is hard for your son but remember when one door closes, another opens. You just have to look for it and keep an open mind. I have an exercise for him. He loved the Navy but what was it about the Navy he loved? Have him sit down and list the elements of what he would think would make an ideal job, e.g., working with his hands; working with people; being in leadership, etc. Then do some homework. What type of jobs out there would have these elements. What can he take from the Navy? How can he best use his GI bill to his advantage? These are some of the exercises I used to make my students work through. They could learn a lot about themselves in the process.

My G'daughter loved her major in technical theater and she was very good at it. Now that being said, I doubt seriously that she can make a career in it. It is not that she is not well educated. She is a hard worker but she does not sell herself. There is no way someone can succeed in theater unless they are well prepared and are willing to do anything (legal of course) that will provide them with an opportunity. I have been blunt with her. So what can she do, well she could teach and would be good at it but she needs to recognize that the arts are the first programs cut in a time of tight budgets which means she needs a secondary field.

Soccer, we will need to compare notes when the sailors receive them.

Sue, according to Pat, of RackPack, either the 6 foot or 7 foot size should work. I ordered the 6 foot, I think. I figured it would be better a little short than bunched up.

DC..I think you are right about the softbank phone costing a lot if they use it "locally" over there. My daughter actually got a phone service when she 1st got there that let her have unlimited text to the U.S. and we communicated via text all the time. Then when Softbank offered their special, I'm pretty sure she got ANOTHER phone from them that she uses to call us from. I think she uses the 1st phone to talk back and forth with her friends when she is in port. I sent her an email asking for the details and will let you all know what I find out.

Judi, the people who have sent pies/cakes in a jar have sent them mostly to land-based military. I have wondered if the jars would create a trash problem. Perhaps that is better sent when they are ashore.

Lisa, I look forward to hearing your report on the bakemeawish site.

Bobdot, my g'daughter has a cell phone from soft bank. It makes calling stateside very reasonable but local calls cost dearly. I guess there is always a tradeoff.

Hi bobdot, it's a cell phone service and I know that Kelcie uses hers to connect to the internet also. Not to sure about the texting. I'll ask Kelcie and let you know what I find out.

Very interesting DC.....have never heard of the pie or cake "in a jar". I'll definitely have to look that one up on the internet.

I just ordered a RackPack. Pat, the owner, is great to work with. She responds to questions quickly. I think I ordered the 6' one but something nags at me that the racks will accommodate a 7' one. Just ask her. They will also embroider your sailors name on it for free. She did tell me that the GW did not need grommets ... those are usually for subs.

I have friends who make the "pie in a jar" and also "cake in a jar." They are sealed in a canning jar. The feedback from sailors/soldiers has been very positive.

I just mailed off a box of pillowcases to troops in Afghanistan. Out of curiosity I asked about the price differential between the military flat-rate box and regular parcel post. I save $3.00 but it wasn't very heavy ... heavier than the cookies and personal items I send to our g'daughter, but not very heavy.
