Arwen do they ever get to come home during that holding period?  My son thought he would be home a few weeks after Bootcamp and before he had a spot at his A school in San Antonio.

Comment by Arwen on January 7, 2012 at 11:31pm

Most new sailors won't ship out Friday OR Saturday. They get the whole weekend of Cinderella Liberty at Great Lakes, and travel to their A-schools later that week. Only the first 2-4 divisions ship out Friday and Saturday.

Also, some new sailors will NOT start with the next class at their school. Frequently the class is already full, and they are put in holding (a lot like processing, but with more freedom and less to do) until there is an open class. At some schools sailors can be in holding for as long as 3-4 months. At others, less than a week.

SO - some of the SR's in 12/054 got calls home - AND some of them had computer time - so I'm thinking that guy who talked to me via FB was legit.

Gayle:  In addition to what Lala said, they probably know earlier than PIR day if they are flying out on Sat.  I remember my son telling me at least a week before PIR, maybe two weeks, that he was flying out Sat. (called GradNGo back then).  He just didn't know flights yet, but knew he was leaving on Sat.  We suggest you book your return flight on Sunday if possible in case they have more time with you.  Of course, as Lala said, if he is staying in GL, then he should have daytime liberty with you all weekend (except for watches if he is scheduled for them).  So you may want to book late Sunday or Monday if possible.

Blackie that is usually what all of them are told. they usually leave the base between 2 and 3 am heading to the airport then their flights are spread out during the day. You can usually meet them at the airport and get some extra time with them while they wait on their flight.

Comment by Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons on January 7, 2012 at 7:37pm

Gayle, is he staying in Great Lakes for A-school? If so he should get time with you on friday, Saturday and Sunday. If he goes elsewhere to A-school then he will find out the day before or morning of PIR what time his flight is. Most of the time they fly out on Saturday but we suggest you plan to stay until Sunday if possible just in case he has a later flight.

Congrats blackie! It feels good to hear from our Sr's! What ship div is your SR?

Crazy about the computer access and possibilities.  I had no idea there was even a possibility of computer usage, earned to otherwise!  And Taco Bell? Uh Oh!

Got a letter today....GREAT!

QUESTION:  Whats the general consensus on when they find out their ship date after PIR. I know where he is going, and when the next Class starts at his "A" school but I wonder when they tell him when he leaves and if he will have the entire weekend after PIR for Liberty. (Days only I know!!)
