Angel....when traveling to cold climates, I usually wear heavy tights..you can fund them at Macys and Target. (Our Target has 'em)   They are thin enough to wear under jeans and really help keep you warm! Throw those wool socks on and a hat to keep the heat in and it's a big help. Lightweight, easy to pack and effective.  Glad you found some stuff for 10 bucks too! Yay!

NOTE: Angel and I hail from the same area, but I'm not going (hubby is..and he's from a cold climate and loves the cold!)

17 Days!!!!! I cannot wait to live vicariously through you all! My Hubby better take a million pictures or he can't come home!

CamoMom, I had never heard of Boot Campaign Combat Boots.  If the boots on the site are the one's that you have ordered, could I make a suggestion?  I would wear the boots for a few days before going to PIR and condition your feet.  Many of the SR's get blisters when they first wear the boots and you wouldn't want to suffer with those while enjoying your time with your new sailor.

We'll be at Sarge's meet and greet too the night before 2/3 PIR! Hope to meet all of you there!! It's coming faster than I thought it would. Thank God!

"Dressy casual" is what many decide on wearing to PIR.  I wore nice black jeans, sweater, jacket.  You will see all kinds of dress there...but it is nice to be comfortable yet nice casual. Remember, there is some walking involved to get to the PIR hall, so comfortable and warm shoes are a must.

eljac:  I am in S. FL and worried about the same thing.  Make sure you have a heavy coat and dress in layers.  It was in the 20's daytime when we were there, teens at night.  We were comfortable in the layers/heavier coat.

Good Morning, all.

Well, actually, RTC tells them not to leave the airport.  They are to stay at the USO until time to head to the gate.  However, some have reported that they asked USO personnel if they could leave for a while (when they had afternoon or evening flights) and they told them that was fine, as long as they returned at least 2 hours before flight time.  They are no longer under the control of RTC then, but obviously bound by Navy rules.  So...it is up to each family to decide what they want to do.

I just know one thing:  If they miss that flight to A School....oh boy....happened to a sailor I knew about (but not due to leaving the airport).  He was in big trouble.  So....be very careful when you make this decision.  Most of the flights leave in the morning anyway, although some will not leave until later in the day.

Good morning and thanks for all the tips on what to wear.  Like AmyD, I am also from Florida and have thin clothes.  I am worried about freezing as I am typically cold anyway.  We are leaving 2 weeks from this Wednesday!  I am so excited, cannot wait to see my SR.  I am expecting a very different young man than the one that left here a few months ago.

The bleachers at PIR are metal. I had brought a poncho and sat on that so my rear end wouldn't freeze!
Also, the floor of the bleachers is solid (IOW you can't see through to the ground below) BUT there are these almost foot long openings underneath the benches that are just wide enough for todays technology to fall through...anything that does is lost to the "abyss". So, don't set anything valuable down on the benches that could fall through.
