Michelle, no, I'm sorry I don't know that, as my son actually went to Pensacola for A school.  I would suggest that you give Sarge a call  and maybe he could give you an idea of what the cost is from the airport to GL.  Everyone has wonderful things to say about him.  As the time gets closer, you may even be able to make arrangements for Sarge to go get him.  His number is  847-212-0246

Thanks for the info he will stay in the GL for A school My plan is to send him back a few days early just in case any idea what a cab would cost?  As you can tell I really want him home for leave so if I make it easy for him maybe he will decide to come home.

Michelle, it would depend on the a lot of circumstances, like when they arrive, and where they attend their A school.  When our group came home on leave (12/17/10) and returned back to their A school base, there were different options available for different sailors.  Some sailors were able to call the Quarterdeck at their A school and if they had someone available, they would send someone to pick them up at the airport.  Other sailors had to take a cab on their own to their A school (some shared cabs, if they came in at the same time)  Some sailors were able to hitch a ride with other sailors, at the airport, who happened to be returning at the same time.  Other sailors were able to contact the USO to secure a ride.  It all depends on the circumstances of your sailor at the time that they do arrive.  It is ultimately your sailor's responsibility to secure transportation to their A school, but as you can see, there are different ways that they can do that.

My son had planned to take a cab from the airport and made sure he had enough cash with him, in that event.  Once he arrived at the airport, he was lucky enough that another sailor on leave, offered him a ride to the base.

Question for anyone to answer if my son decides to come back to NJ for leave, and we fly him back to chicago how does he get from the airport to the Base for A school? do they have transportation for them or maybe a cab. I would like to have this figured out for him so he has some options...Thanks

RuthL, Yes, if she is granted leave time, she will be responsible for getting to her A school on time.  My son had to report to A school on 12/28, last year, and he choose a flight that left our hometown on 12/26.  He then had some extra time in the event of delays.

If my daughter decides to take leave and return home, we then need to make sure she gets to her A school at the porper time correct?  Of course I worry about snow and flight issues, but would love to have her home for a bit.

Some of your sailors, (those staying at GL for A school) may also make the choice to stay at GL, instead of taking leave time to come home.  This was the case with some of the sailors in my son's 12/17/10 PIR.   If this is the case, those sailors will most likely be allowed some liberty during that weekend.  But, as Craig stated, they are required to wear their uniforms while on liberty.  This is yet another scenario that could occur with some of your sailors.
Comment by Craig on November 8, 2011 at 10:21am

Sailor Mom - Just to clarify Betsy, they are REQUIRED to wear their uniform while on liberty in Great Lakes.  However, because you guys are in the new years group, and they will allow them to go on leave, they DO NOT need to wear their uniform while on leave but they MUST be in a leave status.

The difference? One is liberty, one is leave.  Leave has a totally different set of rules.  However, you will find out that he will wear his uniform while on leave just to show it off.  They love showing the uniform and having people come up to them and thank them for their service.  Especially in towns that don't have many military members in them.

Lala, sounds like fun day planned for you, lol.

Sailor Mom, as diannep said, it's very important that they heed the rule about the uniform while on liberty.  There will be people around the area who will know that they are recent graduates.  They are very easy to spot as their posture and haircut is a dead giveaway, lol.  We went to the mall with my son after PIR and he would even notice the sailors who weren't wearing their uniform properly.  Of course, he didn't say anything, but if he noticed it, then  I'm sure there are higher ups who are out there looking too.
