Wonderful to see so many energetic moms in connected with one PIR date. Diannep is indeed a real N4M vet. She's always on the mark - so listen to her suggestions.
@diannep did you know about the new "add a page" function available recently? I use it to catalog important information. I have them set to "no comments" allowed. See the 8 pages I added on New Moms Stop Here. They are located just below the member icons. If you have time, we would love to have you be on our panel of advisers too.
Someone sent me a friend request with a question about sending college transcripts/address discrepancy. Just as I was reading your request, my electricity went off and I lost your info. Can you please send the request again?
Good morning everyone :-) I am Lala, PIR ribbon Queen, I am here like Diannep and some others to help make this boot camp journey easier for you. My daughter and son-in-law are both in the Navy and based in VA Beach. My daughter had PIR last summer on July 23rd so I have been here over a year already. She was in the Choir/936 DIV and was a Grad and Go (or whatever they are calling it today lol) and she left on a chartered flight for Pensacola. We drove to PIR from NC and stayed at the Navy Lodge. If you have any questions at all feel free to ask. I love this site and I am happy to help in any way I can. Again, Welcome!!!
Hi Buffie, It is so good to have you back with us again, I wonder how different this experience will be for you this time around considering what you already know about the experience and also considering it is a daughter this time around. I will have another child going in a year from now. My son, the baby of the family will be joining soon but not leaving until he finishes one more yr of high school.
Hi Sharon! I am Sandy and my son has been in the Navy 13 months he is a FC. He just got orders today for (C)school at Dam Neck, VA. He will be there for 177 days and will be working on CWIS m15. What ever that is.
I really admire anyone who can go through the boot camp experience twice with their kids. I gained weight and got lots of grey hair.
Yeah I have a feeling the only easier part about the second time around will be that I am not so lost and in the dark about everything NAVY. But I think it will bring just as much a feeling of emptyness along with new worries, like what if he doesn't make it can he handle the fact that his sister did it and he didn't. Not that I don't think he could do it just as good as she did but it still worries me. I must be crazy to worry about such things. :~]
Got my letter today! My SR Kirstyn is in ship 02 div 941.... she said that she met another girl who is going to be an AO so they are going to see if there is a way they can be roommates at school. Never thought a form letter would make me so excited!
I read somewhere else that if someone attending is retired military they dont count on the guest list? My husband is RET. USN and it would be great if we could get another sibling in..... hope someone knows!
Bev, you could have your SR find out that info for you. You can also ask on the RTC FB page. They could probably tell you how or if it can be arranged.
I would love for him to wear it again, but it would mean having to shave... and he isnt to keen on that. he did it for my sons wedding last sept, and as soon as it was over, the beard cam back! lol
Hi Everyone! I just found ya'll! I was at the other PIR group 8/26/11, too. I love the countdown clock above!! OMG, I can't wait to give my son a BIG HUG!!! :)
My name is Suzanne, my son is Kevin! Hello All! He is on Ship 07 Div 271. Then he goes on to Fl for the start of training for AIRR. How about everyone else?? :)
OH! Any news on Meet & Greet?
I like Janequa's question on the PIR start time. I know I saw/read somewhere that its always at a certain time...??? LOL!
Hello everyone! Glad that you are all finding your way here!
I am "catching up " on your posts and need to add a "caution" for you.
While first names ARE allowed on N4M...we advise you that it is probably better not too.
Two reasons...good practice for OPSEC and the RDC's read these pages. If you have a picture of your SR and your profile is public plus you display their first name they CAN be "figured" out. Since the SR are trying to stay "under the radar" so to speak, this could bring unwanted attention. I know of one SR recently who got connected up with his mom and he had to do 5 push-ups for every time she posted. One young man walked into class one day to find his face plastered on the wall from a projector.
There are definitely NO LAST NAMES allowed on here. This is not a secure site and ANYONE can read it. Again OPSEC...this is good practice for us as we will have to live with it for our Sailors career. Many of the ratings (jobs) require security clearance and "loose lips sink ships" is even tighter there!
Also, when you start getting letters...please do not post any personal comments that your SR might make about someone. Or negative ones about your SR and or comments that they might make. We have had instances of that happening with bad results.
These rules are in place to protect your SR and YOU. It is so sad for us to hear when something goes wrong for one of you when it could have been prevented. We want you and your SR to have the BEST experience!
Here is a link to the Community Guidelines for N4M. Please read them when you can.
randolphnavy-if that is your last name and you share it with your SR (Seaman Recruit), you will need to remove your post. You may reword it by leaving out your first names and/or change your N4M name.
Oh...and I keep saying "SR" -Seaman Recruit. That is their "rank" right now in Boot. This is how we commonly refer to our loved ones in Boot Camp. Even now when I post about my graduated son I call him "my Sailor" I still do not use his name publicly on this site.
You MAY of course do so when you private message your friends...those ARE private.
randolphnavy: I echo what fireteam said. If it's not your SR's last name, no problem, but if it is, you need to delete that.
PIR is from 9-10:30 am. But you all will need to get there long before that...we left on Residence Inn's 6:30 shuttle and were seated in the PIR Hall right after 7. Wouldn't do it any other way. Got better choice of seating within our division group that way. They have pre-ceremony action going on and videos.
Ladies, just a reminder. No SRs last names on here, even as screen names. Also, we recommend that you do not use your SR's first name either...better to try and remain anonymous from your SR on these posts as Navy personnel working with your SRs read these. Be careful how personal you get when you post...especially when disclosing personal info your SR may have passed on in a letter. Dates of activities, etc is fine...just not personal comments or feelings that may have been intended to stay private!
Thanks Sharon for the info about the guest limit and active duty.I didn't know that this time last year.I know they check your names on the list when going to the graduation area.We already have to hotel booked.I just have to find out later if she is a grad and go.My daughter hasn't said if she wants to go to six flags after graduation or not.
This is one of the things we did on our PIR date.We also did beads and division numbers. Each division had its own color.I wasn't sure if yall were gonna do something like this or not.I made lots of friends working on the projects. It had given us something to do to pass the time until graduation.
Sharon: Yes, you are right...except now they want the GradNGo term gone completely. Very confusing as SRs are still calling home saying they are GradNGo meaning flying out. Maybe that will change with this group as RTC is trying to get all on the same page.
Sometimes they fly out on Sun if flights are full on Sat.
Remember, ladies. You can meet your sailor at the airport on Sat or Sun, obtain a gate pass from their airlines, and wait with them until their flight leaves. Have ID for the gate passes!
Assuming this is a first name? Then not required to change it but recommended. Trying not to link you with your SR on here so that you can "chat" more freely with the others.
10 DAYS! NO FORM LETTER! i'm beginning to get a bit ANXIOUS! however, remaining patient! soooo, i take it this is the 8/26 "group" for DIV 274???? since the other has been renamed DIV 270? ok...hangin on with the rest of y'all!
Just a reminder, the box usually comes from Fed-Ex. If you have a front door that they would come to and you come in a different way like through the garage be sure and check your front porch for the box. There was one mom a couple months ago who had given up on ever getting her box and then she was working on the flower bed and looked up and saw a box on the porch. It had been there for 3 weeks lol.
I have had several people ask me to post this info to this page as well since the other PIR group page is now a DIV page. Thanks for the heads up :-) You guys are awesome.
Thanks Diannep, I do make ribbons for anyone who would like to order them. They are a great way to show support for your Sailor, a really good way to recognize other members of N4M's especially at the meet and greet, waiting in line at PIR and even in the mall and airport. It was so cool when my daughter had PIR because I saw everyone wearing the ribbons I made and I could walk up to them and say Hi I am Lala from Navy for Moms. I wish I could go to every PIR and meet all my new friends :-) The ribbons also make a great keepsake for framing or a scrapbook. Here are a couple of pictures, if you want more info send me a friend request on here or send me an email to: uniquememorymakers@yahoo.com
Ladies...hang in there! I am on the west coast and it took twelve days for my form letter to arrive! SR arrived on a Tuesday and I received on a Saturday.
I posted info on jokes and such to send to your SR up in the discussion area.
As you may already know there is a special way to send your SR mail.
We recommend no colored envelopes (My SR never mentioned a problem. This is usually up to their RDC's like/dislike!). No bulky envelopes...they'll have to open it front of the RDC (contraband). No packages-again opened in front of RDC-if it contains edibles it will be thrown out or consumed by RDC's!
Definitely, no musical cards! We've heard stories about what happens with these from-dancing or IT while they play; sometimes until the batteries run out!
Sometimes moms have sent newspaper articles only to hear that they are thrown out before the SR can read them.
So, that being said here is what we do...copy Pics, jokes, puzzles(I did word searches), cartoons ( I did color with no problem but again that was my Sailors RDC's), drawings( little bros and sisters like to do this...moms too!), ON THE BACK of your letters. This keeps the envelope smaller.
We also recommend typing in 14 pt. font. Ummm...NO SR would ever dream of doing this (wink) but there is a red light on at night after lights out (think Naval vessel) that they sometimes read too. So no red ink either. I did hand write some to make it "homey".
I know it seems "plain" but the "back of the letter" thing helps.

Hi to all! i am a new "veteran" mom. My sailor PIRed on June 17.This site will be your lifeline for the next 7-8 weeks. I check in with my original group to see where they are in their Navy walk and I never thought I would do that...we would all just move on. NOT!
No question is a dumb one...never...there is so much to learn,,,Navy speak...whole diff way of talking.....read as much as you can; watch the videos. All what fireteamleaderswife. put on is a great starting point.

Sharing, without compromising what is personal from your SR, is so helpful to other moms who may not be getting the same info..sharing diff aspects of what is going on. Each SR writes what is important in their eyes and may not answer your questions The other moms "fill in the gaps" of all the SRs life at BC, ex when they earn flags, or maybe they got IT for an infraction....when tests are....sickness is a huge one.....do not panic they all get sick...so many germs from all over the USA converge on them. I wanted to send them gallons of bleach and wash in/wash out instructions!!!!
You are on the roller coaster ride of your life!!! These veteran ladies and all the new moms are here to share it with you.Through your joys, struggles and tears we will all be here to hold you up!
tysmom, Welcome to the group. I am glad you mentioned about SR getting sick while at boot camp. This happens all the time. They are living in close quarters and no matter how clean they are, germs spread. My son's division got 2 waves of colds. The first from their own division, the second from another division. My son said that every division became ill at one time or another.
When we arrived at my son's PIR, I was surprised to find that things are not so strict as I thought they would be. The Sailors standing guard at the gate at RTC were very polite and helpful. As long as you have ID you are all set.
Sharon, I am so happy for you. How exciting!! Real mail should be coming soon. It just takes longer at first. I think letters arrive either Weds or Thursday. I remember letter writing day was Sunday.
Thank you all, I will tell him! It was so great to go to the airport and great him! Didn' t het to do that last time.
Sandy, ditto on the career! I am seeing it as a ministry too.
Tysmom- welcome, welcome, welcome!
Sharon-Yay and hooyah!
My son called his mom on Navy Business (I got form letter today) to find out some medical info from 2006. He has since moved in with me. He called her cause she was the one who made him go to counseling and got a antidepression med. from family dr. I took him back to counselling and they stopped meds and helped me get him into my custody, all he ever wanted. I have the Dr info and she does not. He told her if he did not get it they could discharge him. Does recruiter have a way to get it to someone or what do I do????

Ladies-
I posted info on jokes and such to send to your SR up in the discussion area.
As you may already know there is a special way to send your SR mail.
We recommend no colored envelopes (My SR never mentioned a problem. This is usually up to their RDC's like/dislike!). No bulky envelopes...they'll have to open it front of the RDC (contraband). No packages-again opened in front of RDC-if it contains edibles it will be thrown out or consumed by RDC's!

tysmom, Welcome to the group.
