Hi everyone, my son graduated on January 20 and is scheduled to start school on March 1.

  • jacketfan24 (corpsman mom)

My son got there on October 29 and didn't start classes until Dec. 13, about 6 weeks.  He will graduate March 13 but doesn't think he will get to come home before going on to Camp Pendleton since he took two weeks at Christmas.  He goes to Okinawa after that so I really hope he can come home for at least week then since we can't go to his graduations.

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Txfuturebabydocmom, maybe you can help me. My son graduated surf tech training last week. They picked their orders 2-3 weeks before graduation. All the other corpsman except my son and 1 other have received their orders. Should we worry about the delay? He was on the deans list when he graduated. One of his other friends also picked Jacksonville (picked orders after my son). Is already there. Thanks for your input.
  • brandon'sgirl

Thank you guys so much! I hope it won't be too long, but I guess we will see.

  • proud2baNavyMom

@txfuturebabydocmom  we are getting ready to make reservations to come down for the 2/29 graduation.  Any suggestions on hotels close to base that are reasonable inexpensive.  My hubby is not one for glitz more practicallity. LOL  most post I have read about hotels close to base is that they are not in a very good neighbohood, and my son says stay closer to riverwalk.  Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

  • celinamae

Are people that aren't dependents allowed to stay at the hotel on post? Do you guys happen to know by chance?? :) I'll be there next week visiting my honey. I booked two nights at a hotel on riverwalk from priceline, but I'm hoping my last two nights to be as close to him as a possible. Thanks gals!

  • proud2baNavyMom

TY so much for info will decide today and make reservations.

  • Judi(NavyMom)

@Proud2baNavyMom- Just got back from visiting this weekend. We stayed @ Marriott Riverside. It was spendy, but was attached to mall & was centrally located. I felt well worth it.  The Alamo was a block away!  We ate breakfast @ IHOP express in food court so saved some on meals during day and had a nice dinner.   There was a LaQuinta across the street & Hampton Inn down the road.   Hope that helps....I can't make graduation....please take lots of Pics!!!

  • Tink

I visited my daughter twice. First time I stayed at Sam Houston on base. Very nice, $106 per night. You don't have to be a dependent, but, I would book under your sailors name. My daughters BF stayed at bldg 592 on base, $76 a night but not as nice as SH house. Second time I stayed at Country Inn and Suites by airport. 10 minutes from base. Very nice place, includes breakfast for $60 a night, but I booked it from a promotion they emailed me.
  • proud2baNavyMom

Thanks for all the info ladies.  My husband is a very strict at following budget says"your just slepping there".  I ended up booking at travelodge close to base bc that is what he wanted.  Sometimes it is great to have him so tight on purse strings and others I just want to strangle the purse. LOL but he is right it is very close to base and was very inexpensive so we have more money to spend while there LOL that my view any way don't know what his is LOl.  @ Judi I will take lots and lots of pictures and am also going to try to video.

  • navymomsrock

Hi everyone.  We went to SA this weekend to see our son.  He graduates today.  We stayed at the Crockett Inn.  It was beautiful.  It is literally right next to the Alamo.  It is only about 10 minutes from the Base.  I highly recommend it.

We had to miss graduation because they moved it from Tuesday to Wednesday.  But he is an official Hospital Corpsman today and leaving for Italy very soon.  We are very proud of him.

  • sheryl Navy 2

COngratulations to all the new HN .. My son got to Italy early hours today .i hope :)
  • raeinaz

Good Morning..My Son will PIR from Great Lakes Next Friday and already has his Orders for San Antonio. We will be going to PIR on 2.17.2012...I am wondering what he can take with him right away to A School. If there is information somewhere can someone please direct me to it? Thank you....

  • CDMom

Hi Raeinaz, Congratulations on PIR next Friday.   You can meet him at the airport and get a visitors pass and go to the gate with him.  At the airport you can give him his cell phone and lap top or notebook, etc.  Make sure he makes enough room in his backpack for those items.  You cannot take him to the airport, but make sure you meet him there.   Your Sailor has to be with you to get your visitors pass from the terminal he is flying from.  Hope this helps

  • raeinaz

Thanks CDMom...When we talked to our son yesterday he said he could have no electronics at all for the first phase and he thought that included his cell phone...But I thought I had read somewhere that they could have cellphones and laptops right away...I will bring them and have him take them...any other info will be appreciated...

  • Sharon

Hi Raeinaz,  My son's PIR was January 20.  We met him at the airport with his computer, cell phone, MP3 player, running shoes (he is a runner and doesn't like the shoes the Navy issued), snacks, and a book.  We got his backpack from him on Friday, packed it and took it to him at the airport on Saturday morning.  He was able to use all of the above immediately at San Antonio.

  • raeinaz

    Sharon thanks, and great news...

I am pretty sure that I have read somewhere they do not get to wear civilian clothes right away...those I think we can send by mail in a few weeks, would that be correct? So much to figure out before we leave for PIR...

  • sheryl Navy 2

We took gym clothes and electronics to PIR so he could fly knowing he had them as soon as he got to SA . This son had left a duffle in his closet with all he wanted sent to SA . So the if it fits it ships boxes became our best friends . You can even get a pair of size 13 bates army boots in one of the shirt boxes :)
Again they then have an issue with storing and I know several of his buddies donated to new SRs coming to SA . Just a thought
  • Sharon

Raeinaz,  My son made to Phase 2 the Friday following his graduation.  This is typical.

  • jacketfan24 (corpsman mom)

We took my son's Nook and cell phone to the airport; he really needed the Nook since he had a 6 week wait for school to start.  He came home for Christmas and took some of his civilian clothes back with him and I mailed a box recently with a few things that he didn't have room for on the plane.  He is heading to Camp Pendleton then Okinawa after A school (scheduled to graduate March 13) and plans to mail a lot of it back home because of lack of space.  We can mail it back to him once he gets to Japan.

He was able to use his phone right away; he only recently got a laptop but could have used it also.

  • proud2baNavyMom

Would like to tell everyone that if you should have a family emergency do not hesitate to call Red Cross after talking to your sailor to see if they want to come home.  My father-in-law passed away this morning and after speeking with my son he decided he wanted to come home for funeral.  With in 2 hours of contacting the Red Cross my son's trainers were contacted his chit leave was filled out waiting for him in the trainers office and his flight was booked for him to come home.  Yes it will change his grad date to a week later and we will not get to see him graduate, but we are still going down for the week before.  I can honestly say from experience the Navy is one big family and they do take care of family.

  • raeinaz

Thanks for all the information...Each day is a learning experience as i have walked through this journey with my son....and I know there are so many more to come...:)

  • Tink

proud2baNavyMom - sorry to hear of your loss. My condolences. I am happy to hear that the Navy and Red Cross were swift with their actions. It shows they really do care about our sailors! Comforting to know.

  • LeysaNavymom

    hello everyone,

our son started his A school this past Wednesday after 5 wks of waiting since he arrived in SA.   I texted my son Wed evening and the only thing he said "it was tiring day"...uuuhh.   well its going to be a long 3 mths for him...=)  anyone has any feedback regarding A school for those who's started this past week.

Also he is in bldg 1479...anyone in this group in the same bldg?

Also, how far is the postal offc? we have send him couple mails but he has not pick it up yet.  I told him you had 5 wks before,  now you even going to be so busy ...i do no knowt when he will have time...unless a Sat morning.

If someone knows when is graduation date for this class? or when in advance the sailor will know if he is graduating?

Any feed back let us know...thanks

  • Judi(NavyMom)

proud2baNavyMom-I am so sorry for your loss. It is comforting to know the Navy & Red Cross provides the appropriate & timely support to sailors in times of need.

LeysaNavymom-My sailor grads in about 2 weeks. The time really flew by, once they started classes.  I always sent things to the UPS store on base. They will text sailor when package arrives.

  • dadyellow

LeysaNavymom, our son also started school this week, I do not know the building number he is in. We have sent him 2 care packages and one letter that he picked up from the post office.,he said that sometimes there are long lines and also sometimes it wll be closed by the time he has time to go there. I am glad that he did not get rolled back because he was getting a bit bored. His last name starts with a B and ends with a z..We have not had much feedback from him yet. Not sure when graduation is also.

  • CDMom

Hi All, Lisanavymom - Our son started school this week also and he told me his graduation date is May 5th.  My son is in building 1475, so close.  Our son asked us not to send him any more packages or mail because it is such a long wait to receive his mail and he just doesn't want the distraction.  He doesn't want to bother getting a PO Box, which would make getting mail easier.  I've heard that is what some sailors do.  He got the two packages a month after we mailed them.  I was thankful he got them.

He said they took CPR.  I laughed and said well at least you already know the Heimlich.  He saved my life one day when I took all my vitamins at one time, they closed my wind pipe and I could not breath he jumped up and one or two squeezes and out they came.   Wow! that was scary, so he is already my hero.

  • LeysaNavymom

Thank you Judi, dadyellow, and cdmom...for your advice.   yes 1479 n 1475 not that far, but i will be surprise if they know each other with so many students.  Also, i do not know if they mix the students from one bldg to another bldg in the same classroom.   Also...is anyone know, how many students per class?  Do they stay with the same group all day or do they change classes like College etc.  Also, I wonder if they will have homework or it just reading material to be ready for test.

He asked me to mail his black backpack he got from basic training to use for school i imagine with some tshirts and navy running shoes that he got from basic training.    He will have to go by force to the postal offc to get this package and just couple regular mail we send him two weeks ago.  After this package we are not sending more mail.

thank you all for your comments....=)

Hi All, My son has been in SAsince late November. When he first got their he wasnt able to start classes for some time. It was a little overwhelming for him at first, however after leaving boot camp it was a total change, MORE FREEDOM! It is true about standing in the mail line, the lines are long and they are only open a certain period of time, however that seems to get better the longer they are there. The UPS store does try to charge them for pick up so be aware of that. After PIR if you are able to meet him at the airport, they can take cell phones, laptops, civilian clothing, etc. However be aware, if they have more than their backpack and seabag, they have to pay for that as extra luggage. It was our experience at the airport, any sailor who hadd extra luggage was made fun of ALOT by their sailor comrades, so you might want to reconsider that. My son had me ship his laptop to him. He took his cell phone with him. After a couple weeks, I shipped him some civilian clothes. After a couple of weeks, they do work into a more relaxed routine and you will see a big change. Its tough for them after BC, they are shell shocked. My sailor graduates March 26 and his next assignment is in Jacksonville, he leaves April 4.

  • sheryl Navy 2

@ahpmom. good luck to your sailor. Our first of 2 Graduated last month and got to Italy this week .
If you can get to graduation it's a lot more intimate than PIR,but still a great experience we even had time to spend just on base collecting and dropping off but meeting more of his friends . Took a group out to lunch at didn't have family with them .then did the river walk and Alamo in the evening .
There is a lot of field days and waiting around . but once phase 1 is over it flies .lots of tests and study study every spare minute ,oh after a session at the gym ! Mail lines were a pain ups so much better . But they pretty much become self sufficient and make do buying clothes they want , electronics etc. my son bought a tv back in sept . And sold it to an incoming sailor. They make it work , we moms are not always going to be there .
  • raeinaz

I am reading a lot where school does not start right away when they get to SA....sometime for many weeks ??? What do they do during this time ? Should I prepare my son for this possibility?

  • theresawb356

raeinaz - its ok if school doesnt start immediately, my sailor found it helped get him adjusted to life after BC! They now get to earn their Phase cards which allows them more freedom. They get to go off base, there is so much for them to do! They learn how to use the taxi's,to get back and forth, and living base life. We found it was a good let down time after BC, something my sailor needed! He will be ok!

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Raeinaz, ahpmomb2 and Sheryl, are so right. They figure it out. The down time is good for them and after BC they like to go shopping. So they do a lot of that. They are growing up. My son comes to us only if he wants a second opinion or if he is going to do something make (I.e. buying a car). But the day to day things that come up they figure it out. Hang in there.
  • sheryl Navy 2

The gym is everyone's best friend too . My sailor said they got to meet the Air force and Army personel there . Lots of cleaning and plenty of time to get in good study habits. If they don't join one of the set groups my sailor and 4 buddies did their own . Not one of those Boyd had the so called necessary flash cards or coloring book and all were top of their class, and graduated at top . So moms don't stress out about the book or flash cards . My sailor made his own ,as did the other guys . They really reconnect with the outside world . Their phone becomes their best friend again !
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Gcnavymom, my so. Is going thru something similar as he is still waiting for his orders to post. They adjust. We just tell him to enjoy the time off as once the navy gets him going at his next station he is really going to be busy again.
  • Charle&Brandon3

So does anyone know yet how long the school is yet? I've hear 12 and I've heard 14. My husband starts class in 3 weeks. We are both so ready to get this started!
  • raeinaz

Thanks Everyone...So what I am hearing is...let go, and when he needs something he will let us tell us...haha...We are still trying to figure this out...He went from being at home everyday to just being gone....I am just anxious, and so ready to see him Friday at PIR, and trying to make sure that I have everything with us that he may need to take with him...

  • Judi(NavyMom)

My daughter started classes the Weds before Thanksgiving & will grad  Feb 29.

Hard to tell how long program is because of holidays. Sorry... I don't know if/how they adjusted schedule.

She really likes SA. Said really nice city with lots of things to do.  Take advantage of the time before classes start. Decompress from BC.

  • christine

  • yhammer4

My son just arrived in S.A. yesterday and is trying to figure out the best option for internet service.  Does anyone know which is the best way to go?

  • Jana

When my son was there he used an air card that he got from his cell phone provider Verizon.  He said it worked great, but I have no idea how much it cost since he pays the bill.

  • jacketfan24 (corpsman mom)

My son has a hotspot from Verizon; he went with that so he could take it anywhere else he went (of course, he is heading for Japan after a few months in San Diego at FMTB school, so it won't work there.)  It's about $50 a month.

  • yhammer4

Thanks for all the information, I will let my son know when I talk to him!

  • MomP(Helen)

My daughter has been in SA for awhile now. She has Sprint with 4g and has no problems. Took her laptop but says she hasn't used it much just her phone. She's almost done with the EMT part of class

  • JustinsMom

We had a great time with my son this past weekend! He was able to stay with us at the hotel cause he is in phase three! My husband grilled on base for him and some fellow hospital corpsman!

  • MomP(Helen)

@Bellachella my daughter got her orders yesterday. We're very proud of

her choice. Sounds like they may be in the same class.

  • Renee

Can anyone tell me where the best place to order stethoscopes is?  I know we had this discussion MANY pages back - I could probably spend a few hours looking for it.  We're anxiously counting down the days until we see our son next week!  I think he may be even a little excited to see us!!!  Thanks in advace for the help!

  • MomP(Helen)

@Renee best place would be a medical supply store. We have a couple of drug stores here that carry medical supplies and you have someone to help you get the best one.

  • laura h

Someone asked about classing up and having to wait.  Well, my advice from a parent whose sailor went thru the Corpsman training..enjoy your time off because the cirruculum is VERY intense. They were in class from 8-5 and studied most of the night to pass exams the next day. The better you did on your average in class determined where you got to chose from for your duty station orders. It takes a lot of dicipline to get thru this, but they can do it!

For the person who asked about having to wait to "class up".  Tell your sailor to enjoy the time off, as when classes begin, it is very strict and hard. The hours are very long. But they can do it!

My son graduated SA in Nov. and is now an HN studying to get to the next e4 rate.

    Good Luck!
