I was wondering on average how far out are most people setting up their travel plans, what with all the way a recruit can get held back and or kicked out for that matter?

We drove all the way from Dallas and got into Illinois and he called and said he was a Sailor - we set up our reservations at the Ramada on GreenBay Ave. 847-244-2400 $79.00 - ask for military discount.  It was only 3 miles to the right and one turn left onto Buckley to gate 8 to enter the base.  we left our hotel around 6:20 and got into our seats on the first level at about 8:15...We went on a WING and a PRAYER...<3   i heard from other navy moms that it was better to fly into milwaukee because of traffic and chicago BIG size airports. hope this helps...

Hey parents, don't sweat it if your recruit is held back. It's really no big deal. Being held back is no indication whether he/she will be a good sailor or not. My son, currently a lieutenant - a nuke officer on a sub has stellar evaluations was held back because he got dinged a bunch of points for the quality of his underwear folding and shoe shining. He had never ironed or shined a pair shoes before. On top of that he really hated memorization. With the subsequent class, he tutored prior enlisted candidates who were having a hard time with math - in exchange, they did his laundry and shoe shining. It all worked out just fine. We didn't make plan or buy tickets until he give us the go ahead - but it was probably simpler 5 years ago.  To be safe, just pay the extra to get refundable tickets.  Sometimes things change the last minute - it's good to be able to just roll with it.  I have been using Cheaptickets.com lately -  fairly good prices - had to change the dates on a ticket recently (from ND to CA w stop in CO) - cost was $106 on top of the regular fair of 550 for one person.  I like to buy tickets late at night on a Wed or Thur but I start checking nightly now and keep a log of the prices. You have to read the fine print and check various sources including: Cheaptickets, Expedia, Kayak, Priceline plus directly through the airlines.

Good luck all.

MORE TIPS:

1.  Link to airports by state
      http://airportcodes.me/us-airport-codes/us-airport-codes-by-state/

2.  Chicago O'Hare     ORD

     Chicago Midway     MDW

     Milwaukee                MKE

3.  You should check flights from a number of airports (or check multiple airports option if the site provides one).

4.  My understanding is that ground travel is much easier from MDW or MKE than ORD but depends on where you are staying.

5.  Be sure to join the PIR Reference Information group - the are lots of discussions with suggestions.

6.  Be sure to look at the cost for hotel and ground transportation in addition to the cost of the airline tickets. $50 to $100 is insignificant if it means you'll be able to spend more time with your sailor - or go where he wants and do what he wants.

thanks for all the help as per your coment lady Hamilton I am not having neg. thought aor assuming my son will have issues I think he will continue to do just great, but not all of us have tons of money at our disposal so it is an issue to think about.because any of them could have it happen for the silliest of reasons, but thanks for saying Im just being negative that was just really helpful

hotrod,

Lady Hamilton and I have been here for awhile. We have observed quite a bit. We have seen new moms display over the top, drama queen histrionics to moms who get paralyzed with fear about the whole experience to moms who soak up all the information and just run with it.

I believe in the power of positive thinking. It's important that your recruit feels the positive vibes from you.  It will be evident in your voice and the words you choose. My sailor tells to make sure the moms know that it's the sailors who are living it - not the moms.  The visions are not always the same.

Good luck to you and your sailor.

No negative thoughts. :) We bought our tickets on Southwest when we found out our son's graduation date. He was taken out of his division with stress fractures his fourth week. Southwest immediately credited our account with the ticket prices...we just have to use the credits in the next year. We were grateful for this, as we don't have a lot of extra money to throw around either. While we were disappointed at first, we all (including our son) realize that things happen for a reason, this is not the end of the world, he will graduate, and we will get to see him. A year from now, this little bump in the road will be only a memory.

So...my suggestion is to go with Southwest if you're flying. (There was, of course, no problem canceling our hotel reservations...or our rental car.)
