I know it's late and I won't last too much longer this evening, but I knew you ladies would help ease my worry. My son is in about Week 3 and called this evening.  I missed his first call and he immediately called back and the sound of his voice was pitiful.  I asked was he okay and he said he was just afraid he was not going to get to talk to me.  I could hear him bordering on tears and worry.  Worried about tests, keeping up with his "job", et cetera.  Please tell me this is normal!!  I did everything I could to reassure him and let him know that he was doing a great job.  Now, I just need some reassuring.  It is very unusual for me to hear that level of emotion from this child, so you understand my worry.

My husband is a Navy vet and he said not to worry! The first three weeks are the hardest. It gets better for your son from her out!

Thanks for the reassurance.  I sat down and wrote him a letter of encouragement with a card from us all.

Week three is when they begin to succeed both personally and as a team.  This is when it gets better!  I may have gone through boot camp a long time ago, but it was true then too.  Be encouraging and supportive, let him know he's got this.

Thank you for your response. I wrote him a letter. Also, color me extremely shocked, but my recruit reached out to retired USN dad.  They have been estranged for a few months.  Dad's PTSD has levels of highs and lows that can be damaging to personal relationships.  His Dad missed the call but my recruit left him a message and I provided Dad the address and this is very very promising. I see reaching out to Dad a step in the right direction, maybe.  Let's keep our fingers crossed.  Thanks again for your supporting message.  I need all the strength and backbone I can get!!

I don't know what your recruits PIR date is, but don't forget to join that group. There are others there with recruits at the same point in training.

Thank you.  I did.  I did see that there was a Mom or two that received that same call of worry.  Now I know I'm not alone.

I also heard it gets easier after week 3. I haven't received my phone call yet expecting it next week.
Thanks for all the great comments. I love seeing this support system.

Worried mom, bootcamp is emotionally trying on the recruits. I went to graduation and my son and I cried almost the whole time. Once he gets to "A" school and has some freedom and dignity back and his cell phone :) things will be easier..My son wrote me letters every week and I wrote to him everyday. He said the letters saved his life! :)

Hang in there, this too shall pass..

My boy is now on deployment, bootcamp graduation was one year ago today..I now wait for email everyday as he rarely has cell service where he is on his ship..

This has been a life changing experience for me and my son...I convince myself it's for the better...

Good luck to you and your son..
