Tracie,

I hope everything works out for your son but if he does not pass his fitness test, as B'sNukeMom says, "it is not the end of the world." It may seem like that for a bit but there are many other options for your son and the Navy is a hard life. Most people won't even join and then of those that do, many of them only serve their enlistment time. If your son is having doubts that is normal and it will be up to him to decide what he wants most. But you are not a failure as a mom and he is not a failure as a SR. I know you can not write him letters and mail them but you can still write encouraging notes and have them ready to mail when you do have a form letter. Also, no matter your religious beliefs, I believe there is a connection between a mother and her child and for me that meant praying for my son, for others it means sending positive thoughts. You are his biggest cheerleader and encourager, even if you can't tell him in person!

Tracie,

Hey, these feelings that you are having is normal. It's hard knowing they will be leaving soon. Make as many memories as you can while he is here. My son and I wrote each other a note and we did not read it till we were missing each other.

He said it helped him so much just to be able to read it and know that we were all pulling for him and it helped him get thru boot camp. Also, I wrote to him twice a day I would start in the morning and then finish at night before I went to bed. I would mail him a letter every day. this is a roller coaster ride of emotions but we are here for you. Cry when you need to and it is ok to do so.

Once you get that form letter and that call communication begins with getting letters and sometimes they can earn calls so you might get an unexpected call.  :)

Staying busy is key. I started working alot.  :) You always have them on your mind while they are gone. Mine is my youngest but you will get thru it.

I also tell the new moms that boot camp is for us as much as it is for them. While they are getting stronger so are we!!!

I was busy this morning or I would have replied right away. I'm usally on during the weekends and at night during the week.

Let us know how you are doing and if you have any other questions.

You've got this!!!

Welcome!! Please read my blog to give you an idea of what the first few weeks may look like.. First Things First-- The Quarantine Edition Up and to the Left is a link to all the Navy Lingo! It is titled Navy Speak and you can find it here. We are here to get you through the “Great Silence” of the next 4 weeks (ish) and the 10 weeks of BC (ish). You will come to learn that No News Is GOOD News and everything is Needs of the Navy. You life will be Hurry Up and Wait and it’s ok to make plans but they are subject to change until after they have happened so it’s best to embrace the Motto: Semper Gumby!! (Always Flexible!!)

The Expected timeline will look like this
Day 0 -- Travel, Arrival and "I'm Here" scripted phone call

Week 1&2
Day 1-14 -- ROM (Restriction of Movement/ Quarantine-- Lots of studying and waiting) Unless they are Fully Vaccinated (2 weeks after final shot) in which case they skip straight to Week 3.

Week 3
Day 15-21 Arrive Onboard RTC and begin P-days (P-days- Initial Processing Days) including 2 days of P-hold (Weekend)
Day 21-- Complete P days. (Initial PFT & Run)

Week 4- First week of training
Day 22-- Begin training and mail form letter out. Look for it to arrive around 1-2 weeks later

Week 5 -- First inspections and tests (Dental May be this week or next... Not Confirmed)(Form letter/ Personal letters usually arrive this week)

Week 6 -8 -- More training, Drilling (Flags and Marching), Fire Fighting training, Marlinspike (Line handling- How to tie up a Ship to the Pier) and weapons lessons, Confidence chamber( May or may not be happening yet, we don’t know for sure).. Warrior training in here somewhere.

Week 9 & 10 -- Stressful!! They have all their final inspections, PFA, Drills, BS21 and Tests. This is the lead up to the end!!

All of this is assuming no exposure to COVID with additional ROM
Training typically occurs Monday - Friday but we have heard rumors that Saturday’s are now training days as well.
Normal PIR will be 10 Fridays after departure from Home but it can be less by 1 but it can be extended by ???? (lots!!) It just depends on how many times they get caught in the “Ring of Fire” but do not get COVID. IF they get COVID, Once they are recovered they will not be removed from training again even if they are in the “Ring of Fire”. (so there is that small silver lining if kids get sick)
I Hope you’ll come and join us on the Main Boot Camp Moms page: https://navyformoms.ning.com/group/bootcampmoms You may have to scroll down a ways to reach the comments but we’d love to get to know you and answer any questions or concerns you may have or just be a support from others who “get it”.

Because you have a son or daughter that is getting ready to leave for boot camp soon please sit down with them and have a real good talk about what to expect.

Since Covid has hit things have been all over the place - they get put in quarantine, they get out of quarantine, they get put back in quarantine. A normal 8 week boot camp can drag on much longer and it can take a huge mental toll on them. It's important that they understand THIS IS ONLY TEMPORARY! They need to be physically strong but more importantly they need to be MENTALLY STRONG!

Let them know that they probably won't even

Good Morning Tracie - I am glad that you joined the BC Mom group. I was busy yesterday so I did not get a chance to post a welcome here for you. Even if your son is still waiting to leave for BC, feel free to come to the group and introduce yourself. Please ask questions, be sure to read the comments that are posted (those are all the way toward the bottom of our group page and where we do our daily chatting) as we are sharing a lot of things about PIR now that it is live again and people are visiting and returning to share what things are different than from when most of us had our PIR.

If you need anything feel free to reply to this comment and I will respond as soon as I am able.

Welcome to NAVYforMoms.com!

We ask that our members not use a last name or email address in their Username - even if it differs from their Sailor's - so please head to “Settings” on the main page right away to set your new Username (be creative!) and add a profile image (no last names visible) to complete your Profile. Then - and this is important! - read these Community Guidelines and this Operations Security (OPSEC) Checklist, for the safety and privacy of all our Sailors.

Then jump right in!  Browse around the site and check out the groups and the information in their Discussion Forums.

Join this group for boot camp moms, where you'll also find a group for your Pass in Review (graduation) date; and this one for PIR Reference Information.

Get a head start during boot camp by joining groups for, and learning about, your Sailor's occupational specialty and "A" School; and later your Sailor's duty station and/or Navy ship and homeport. You can also join groups for your own state, region or home town and interests from getting ready for deployment to care package ideas.

Please say Hi when you join a group, and feel free to ask any and all questions - everyone was new once, and there is no "dumb" question.

This site was created by the U.S. Navy just for you.  We look forward to getting to know you and your Sailor.

Welcome to the NAVY family - we're so glad you're here!!
